Gilles Remoriquet is forever looking for ways to improve the wines from his 12.5 hectare sustainably farmed domaine, whether that means a dedicated trip the Jura to see a specialist about selecting the right blend of manure, or investing in a second sorting table which eliminates under-ripe berries by flotation, he is not one to rest on his laurels. Cuvaisons in concrete vats are long, giving a light colour yet concentrated yet elegant fruit flavours. Wines are fermented with natural yeasts and never see more than 30% new oak, allowing the fruit to shine through.

2022 Pianerosse Susumaniello, Paolo Leo, IGP Puglia

Susumaniello

Susumaniello is a rare Italian grape variety almost exclusively grown in the Salice Salentino region, with small pockets of vines in Brindisi. This new release from our friends at Paolo Leo is tremendous value and a really interesting wine.  It is packed with red fruits, plums and spice on the nose and palate with hints of pepper and dark chocolate on the finish. The tannins are quite firm, but very fine and there is a pleasant amaro bitterness and underlying savouriness.  Distincitve, (in a good way), and hugely enjoyable for the money.

Pinot Noir

The Crepuscule Pinot Noir by Idun in Elgin shows a very light ruby colour with bricky tints to the rim.  The delightful  nose shows Brambles, rose petals, ripe cherries and strawberries. The palate is wonderfully fresh with red fruits and cherries that are delicate and integrated.

2022 Pojega Valpolicella Ripasso DOC Classico Superiore

Red Blend

The Rizzardi Pojega is an utterly delicious example of this style of red wine, showing a wonderful depth of fruit and terrific balance.  Made from a traditional blend of Corvina, Rondinella, Corvinone and Merlot the wine shows great concentration of dark and red fruits, but also lovely freshness and a harmonious finish.  The addition of 10% Amarone (which now has to be done by law for Ripasso's) simply adds to the complexity without detracting from the elegant freshness which seems to be the hallmark of the wines from this historic estate.  This is the kind of wine which doesn't disappoint, no matter what your taste.

Quinta do Vesuvio is part of the mighty Symington Family Estate.  The Pombal de Vesuvio has pretty floral aromatics on the nose that  mingle with milk chocolate notes and dark fruits.  The palate is opulent and open with more dark fruits and black cherry characters, clove spice and peppery tannins balanced with fine tannins.  Delicious now but with the abaility to age further in bottle.

The Ca Marcanda Promis is a complex wine with an undeniable elegance. The nose is rich and concentrated, with blueberry, liquorice and cocoa hints. It starts fresh and then develops balsamic notes and scents of graphite, before becoming more mellow in character with a rhubarb and menthol note. The palate is voluminous with fine-grained and silky tannins on the finish.

The fabulous Qupe Syrah is a wonderfully expressive wine showing a gorgeous purple colour in the glass.  The inviting nose balances sweet blackberry, raspberry and cherry with more savoury, leather notes and white pepper.  The fruit flavours on the nose carry through to a luscious palate that is juicy and fresh with spicy notes and a superbly balanced finish.  The wine spends 18 months in used French Oak.  This is a very appealing red that is especially good for Autumn drinking and to accompany game dishes.

The Luis Canas Rioja Crianza is a lovely ruby red colour and shows a clean nose with notes of balsamic and fine nuances of redcurrants, strawberries and raspberries with clean oak. This 100% Garnacha is elegant, refined and a perfect representation of the winemaking philosophy at Bodega Alegre Valganon.  Medium-bodied with enticing red and dark fruit characters, including cherry and raspberries, alongside a whiff of wood and spice. The finish has well-integrated, delicate tannins and a beautiful lift.  Complex yet approachable, this wonderful expression of Garnacha from the high altitude vineyards of Rioja Alta is a great wine to try if you have had enough of the big, gutsy modern styles packed with fruit and oak that have become very popular in recent years.

The Benegas Sangiovese comes from ungrafted vines planted by the family in 1935 and represents the perfect blend of 'New' and 'Old' world.  Distinctly Sangiovese with an Argentine twist this deeply coloured red wine shows lots of wild red fruits with notes of vanilla and cocoa on the nose.  The palate is nicely structured with more red fruits, hints of spice and perfectly poised acidity.  The finish is long and balanced with herbal-tinged smoky notes.

Cortona is a hilltop top in Tuscany about 600 metres above sea level, and home to Stefano Amerighi, Italy's finest finest grower of Syrah.  Working biodynamically, Stefano aims to get the very best out of the grape that he loves from the terroir that he adores.  As head of the DOC, Stefano aims to champion Cortona in general as well as his own Northern Rhone inspired wine.  Packed with plush red fruits, minerality and white pepper spice, this lovely wine requries a little more time for the tannins to settle nad become more ingrained, but, as with previous releases, patience will be richly rewarded.

The Liberator Francophile Syrah is a partial whole bunch ferment which gives a wine that is full of vibrant red-black fruit, with an aromatic nose reminiscent of Saint-Joseph lillie. The result is a thrilling young red that is free of the constraints and manipulated flavour profile that come with barrel-ageing. This is a very pure and naked example of the Syrah grape. Dangerously drinkable on release, it could be expected to age for three to five years in bottle.
