The Calusari Pinot Noir has to be one of the best value Pinots around. Gorgeous dark fruit flavours, almost syrupy in its concentration. Dark, rich and potent, with layers of black cherry, raspberry and cinnamon. Deep, with pretty fruit cake and spicy aromatics. A lovely long finish.
The Cramele Recas Estate, owned by Englishman, Philip Cox and his Romanian wife Elvira, have put in a huge amount of work into transforming their slice of grape growing history into a contemporary winemaking haven.
The immaculate vineyards are a combination of evolved plantings from 1447 and much more recent plantings too. This 100% Gamay from Domaine Moulin Camus comes from grapes grown on a slope of pure mica schist which gives the wine juicy, rounded red fruits a bit of tautness and minerality. A warmer than normal, sulphur free maceration for three days helps bring out some warmth and roundness to the fruit, making it slightly beaujolais'esque but without the bubble gum/commercial edge that one would normally find in this price range.
