Vignobles Levet is a fourth generation, family owned domain who farm 4 hectares of vines in the Northern Rhone. The grapes for this lovely Cote Rotie are hand harvested, and spend 24 months in oak following a traditional fermentation, giving a well-structured wine with pretty red fruits intermingled with the telltale spice of the Syrah grape.

2017 Hermitage Monier de la Sizeranne, Chapoutier, AOP
Syrah/Shiraz
Chapoutiers wonderful Hermitage Monier de la Sizeranne is characterised by elegance and restraint, showing red fruits with hints of liquorice on the nose. The medium bodied palate is elegant, if a touch broody, with blackcurrant and raspberry fruit characters and a spicy youthfulness. Coming from a mixture of vineyard sites with different exposures and soil types ranging from granite to silt via alluvial, gravelly soils, this is a complex yet open and forward style with soft tannins. 85% of the wine is fermented in oak giving spicy, woody notes with the remainder fermented in concrete tank providing freshness and the preservation of mineral characteristics.

2020 ‘O Font’ Les Deux Cols, Vin de France
Grenache Blend
Les Deux Cols is a joint venture between Ireland's leading Rhone importer, Simon Tyrell and Charles Derain, one time Sommelier to Alain Ducasse at Le Louis XV in Paris. This Grenache Noir dominated blend is whole bunch and foot trodden, natural yeast fermented in concrete tanks and then matured in a mixture of old barriques and larger demi-muid barrels. Pale in the glass, this is fresh and easy with red fruits and a hint of spice. Hand harvesting takes place at least a week earlier than the neighbouring properties allowing for a fresher style, and all vineyards are either organic or in conversion with some biodynamic practices in use.

The La Combe Pilate Viognier is a terrific example of the grape variety. Delicate with notes of bergamot and flint stone. Very fresh on entry, dominated by the typical Viognier aromas. On the mid-palate, there is good balance between the acidic tension associated with its terroir of origin and the natural full body of the varietal and its ageing. The finish is savoury, bringing out the rustic and mineral overtones.

The Un Bon Canon Cotes du Rhone hits the spot every time with it's fruit forward blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 5% Cinsault and 5% Mouvedre which is fermented in concrete tanks. The vineyards lie in the southern part of the region on a dried up river bed strewn with heat retaining pebbles. The hot summer sun ensures that the wine is bold and fruity with raspberry and dark fruits and hints of garrigue/herbal undergrowth.

Domaine de la Berthete have made a wonderfully approachable Cotes du Rhone that is packed with the warm, sunny flavours of the pebble strewn vineyards of the Southern Rhone. 50% Grenache and 30% Syrah are blended with a selection of other varieties from vines with an average age of 35 years old. The result is a tantalising red that shows ripe black fruits, garrigue notes and a waft of spice on the long, satisfying finish. Not a blockbuster, but packed with flavour, this terrific value red is a great match to roasted red meats.
