The Palacio Camino Real Rioja's provide superb value drinking. The colour is a medium-deep garnet hinting at its age and follows on to the mature, complex nose. The Rioja Reserva De La Familia by Luis Canas is a wonderful Rioja that has a beautiful ruby colour. On the nose it shows complex aromas of leather, ripe sweet fruit and herbs over a base of fine oak. The palate is potent and juicy with structure and good tenacity, leading to a complex finish that shows lots of spice and is long and persistent.

2020 Rioja Reserva Vina Ardanza, La Rioja Alta, DOCa

Tempranillo

A blend of over 30 year old Tempranillo (80%) grown on steep high altitude clay-limestone soils in La Cuesta (Fuenmayor) and Montecillo (Cenicero), and 17 year old Garnacha (20%) grown at 550 metres above sea-level in deep pebble-rich terrains in La Pedriza (Tudelilla-Rioja Oriental). The grapes are cluster selected and hand-harvested before being optically sorted before fermentation which lasts 17 days, followed by a natural malolactic fermentation. The Tempranillo is aged for 36 months and the Garnacha for 30 months in seasoned American oak barrels made in their own cooperage. They are traditionally racked by candlelight 5 times before being bottled.

Viura

The CVNE Monopole Classico Rioja Blanco is a truly unique style of white Rioja that was brought back into production in 2014 to celebrate the centenary of the CVNE brand. 100% Viura with a small amount of Manzanilla added to the barrels which adds a saline complexity to the vibrant Viura fruit. Straw yellow in colour with slight golden hints. The complex nose shows scents of pear, apple, white currant and white flowers underpinned by slightly spicy dried fruits. On the palate there is salinity (Manzanilla influence) and an elegant acidity which provide freshness, on the long, thirst quenching finish.

2024 Rioja ‘Solar de Estraunza’, Rioja Alavesa

The Solar de Estraunza Rioja is a plush, youthful and rounded Rioja made form old Tempranillo vines.  20% Carbonic Maceration and 80 % destemming with a controlled fermentation in stainless steel gives a mightily approachable wine showing vibrant red fruits, liquourice hints and pretty floral notes. The winemaking philosophy at Abel Mendoza is to express the purity of the fruit and the high altitude terroir in which it grows.  His wines are not overly oaked or extracted, instead they are understated and classy.  The Jarrarte Blanco is an intriguing old vine blend of 33% Viura, 33% Tempranillo Blanco with the remainder being made up of Torrontes, Garnacha Blanca and Malvasia.  All vineyard work is carried out organically and the harvest is manual, keeping the fruit in the best possible condition when it arrives in the winery.

The Rioja Blanco Fermentado en Barrica from the amazing Bodegas Martinez Lacuesta is a pale greenish yellow colour with a touch of toasted oak over mellow fresh fruit on the nose. In the mouth, it is initially fresh, with the well integrated oak building in prominence in the mid-palate. The floral fruit character carries through to the well-balanced finish.

Red Blend

The Vermut Rojo, red vermouth is produced in the same way by Martínez Lacuesta since 1937. The Conzia - or extract, aromatic plants and herbs macerated cold in white wine - is aged in American oak barrels, and is added to the white wine with sugar, citric acid and alcohol.
