Add to basket2012 Vina Bosconia Rioja Reserva, Lopez de Heredia, DOCa
Tempranillo
The Vina Bosconia is an unashamedly old school Rioja that manages to balance being light on it's feet yet with true depth and complexity. Made with mostly Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha and 5% split between Mazuelo and Graciano, the Bosconia is aged in ancient American oak barrels for 5 years. There's plenty of savoury fruit notes, spice and cedar alongside more developed characters of dried mushrooms and cedar. The wines from Lopez de Heredia age gracefully and although this Reserva can be joyed now with a decent decant, it is certainly built to last.

In 1970 Luis Cañas changed two hundred years of tradition and became the first winemaker in Rioja Alavesa to bottle his young wine rather than sell it in bulk. This bold move, and his continued pioneering spirit, has cemented the winery's enviable reputation as one of the most progressive in the region. Sheltered below the watchful Sierra Cantabria, the vineyards are all old, small plots on chalky-clay soils with a dedicated team of vineyard workers carrying out organic practices.

Malvasia
The Rioja Malvasia from Bodegas Amaren comes from the El Pomal vineyard which sits at 515 metres above sea level and was planted in 1912. This particular strain, the Malavasia Riojana, sometimes known as Rojal, has traditionally been used by Amaren as part of a mixed field blend with Tempranillo, Viura and other grape varieties. The grapes are harvested manually in small baskets and a grape by grape selection takes place at the winery. Fermentation takes place in a concrete egg, with ageing on its own fine lees in the same egg for 14 months with a weekly bâtonnage (stirring). The wine is completely unoaked and spends 2 years in bottle in the Amaren cellars prior to release. The results are a simply stunning white and unlike any white Rioja we've come across before. The wine is bright in the glass with pale yellow reflections and intense, bright-green hues highlighting its freshness. The nose shows complex aromas of ripe pineapple and pears as well as delicate floral aromas such as orange blossom, dried flower petals, nutmeg, and some lovely brioche. The palate is complex, rich and rounded yet has plenty of room for floral and balsamic essences and remaining elegant on the long balanced finish. Simply delicious!

Tempranillo
We are very excited to welcome the fabulous wines of Bodegas Alegre Valganon to our shelves. Husband and wife team Eva and Oscar strive to produce wines which hark back to a traditional style of Rioja, pre-dating the arrival of the Bordelais and Phylloxera. They farm old plots of vines in the shadow of the Obarenes Mountains which are some of the highest and coolest in the region, yielding wines that are refined and aromatic. Their vineyard plots are managed meticulously and they favour whole bunch fermentation, long macerations and ageing in large, neutral barrels.
