Germany
German wine continues to improve both it’s image and quality, or should we say quality and image? It seems that the british wine drinking public are falling back in love with these charming wines.
The cool northerly aspect of Germanys main wine growing regions gives their wines a universally fresh, vibrant and breezy character. Riesling is still the dominant white grape variety in Germany, but we are now seeing an increasing amount of wine from grapes such as the Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris), Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and Gewurztraminer. Perhaps making the biggest noise at present is the red wines coming out of Germany, especially those made with Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir). Cool climates in regions such as the Pfalz and Rheinhessen are producing utterly charming red wines. These wines need to be explored by the adventurous wine drinker.
