2010 chateau kirwan, 3ieme cru classe margaux
Bordeaux Blend
For over a decade Chateau Kirwan has undergone a massive overhaul both in the cellar and vineyard and has also had a change of winemaker. Meticulous care and attention is paid to every part of the viticultural and vinification process and as a result the wines are truly delicious. The grapes used for Chateau Kirwan are hand picked from the very best plots from the predominantly gravel (with some clay) soils, and then go through two sorting processes, by hand, before being vinified in seperate batches according to the vineyard plot they came from. The wine spends 18 months in oak prior to bottling and half the barrels are brand new each year.

2010 sauternes, chateau lamourette
Semillon/Sauvignon
Lamourette is a tiny domaine which lies within a kilometre of the mighty Ch d'Yquem, and covers a mere 10 ha, making it a truly artisan estate. The soil, which is largely sandy/clay with a sub-soil of limestone, gives the Semillon a freshness and a fruitiness. Hand-harvested over 2-4 ‘tries’ (passages through the vineyard), to ensure the ripest berries are selected. Fermentation takes place in small stainless steel vats, and partially in oak, depending on the age of the vines, terroir and ripeness of the grapes. This is a beautifully balanced Sauternes with dried fruits, honeycomb and quince with perfectly poised acidity which freshens the wine. Already showing nicely with a bit of time in bottle, this will continue to evolve for years to come.

2011 chateau grandis, cru bourgeois medoc
Bordeaux Blend
Château Grandis became a family run estate in 1857 and the vineyards are made up of a modest 10 hectares which enables the family to maintain the strictest high standards both in the vineyard and the cellar. In 2005 Brice Vergez took over the running of the estate and has continued to practice the techniques of hand harvesting, hand pruning and racking from barrel to barrel. He also prefers ploughing between the rows of vines rather than the systematic use of herbicides, promoting soil health wherever possible.

2012 chateau fourcas hosten, listrac medoc
Bordeaux Blend
Quite possibly the finest property in Listrac, Fourcas Hosten can date it's history back to the 18th Century and has 47 hectares of vines. The Merlot is mostly planted on the clay soils, whereas the gravel is favoured by the two Cabernets, Sauvignon and Franc. Up until 2010 the property used to produce very traditional, muscular styles of claret but has since been undergoing conversion to organic farming methods, eschewing the use of pesticides and carrying out as much of the work by hand as possible. The results are a softer, more fruit led and approachable style that offers superb value for money. There has also been much investment in the winery too which has led to the wines getting better and better.

2016 chateau fontestau, cru bourgeois medoc
Bordeaux Blend
Located in the centre of the Médoc peninsula, the superb Cru Bourgeois wine estate of Chateau Fontesteau stretches over a remarkable natural landscape. The thirteenth century castle nestles like a precious jewel encased in a magical landscape, with its forest boasting one-hundred-year-old oak trees surrounded by pines with a charming little lake. The Fontesteau vineyards, a large proportion of which are situated in Pauillac, has been using integrated agricultural methods for the last 30 years, exploiting the plants’ natural defence system and avoiding where possible the use of synthetic products to protect the vineyard. It's now certified as a Sustainable Vineyard. This 2016 vintage provided Fontestau with a perfectly healthy crop and there wasn't any need to add sulphur treatments in the vineyard or the winery. It boasts a very rich garnet colour with an expressive nose showing jammy aromas of red fruit such as cherry and strawberry. The palate is ample and full-bodied with a tense, fresh structure. The tannins are rich and tasty, conferring flavour and length to the wine. This is a remarkably balanced vintage with a real force of character.
