Vignobles Levet is a fourth generation, family owned domain who farm 4 hectares of vines in the Northern Rhone. The grapes for this lovely Cote Rotie are hand harvested, and spend 24 months in oak following a traditional fermentation, giving a well-structured wine with pretty red fruits intermingled with the telltale spice of the Syrah grape.

Chapoutiers wonderful Hermitage Monier de la Sizeranne is characterised by elegance and restraint, showing red fruits with hints of liquorice on the nose. The medium bodied palate is elegant, if a touch broody, with blackcurrant and raspberry fruit characters and a spicy youthfulness. Coming from a mixture of vineyard sites with different exposures and soil types ranging from granite to silt via alluvial, gravelly soils, this is a complex yet open and forward style with soft tannins. 85% of the wine is fermented in oak giving spicy, woody notes with the remainder fermented in concrete tank providing freshness and the preservation of mineral characteristics.

The generous, mouthcoating palate is more of the same with lots of immediately approachable fruit and spice wrapped up in ripe, textured tannins. The Liberator Francophile Syrah is a partial whole bunch ferment which gives a wine that is full of vibrant red-black fruit, with an aromatic nose reminiscent of Saint-Joseph lillie. The result is a thrilling young red that is free of the constraints and manipulated flavour profile that come with barrel-ageing. This is a very pure and naked example of the Syrah grape. Dangerously drinkable on release, it could be expected to age for three to five years in bottle.

This Kelly Washington Syrah comes from a small plot of naturally low cropping vines planted on gentle SW facing slopes. Maritime breezes and mineral rich clay soils help to produce wines with beautiful aromatics and great concentration. The fruit is hand picked, with 15% whole bunch fermentation before ageing in French oak barriques for 11 months. This is a lovely savoury style Syrah with a floral edge. The palate shows restraint and elegance with a lovely balance of fruit and tannins on the finish.

Minimalist wines is a true terroir project and makes wines from the cool, coastal vineyards of the Cape. The fruit for the 'Stars in the Dark' Syrah comes from two mature, low lying vineyards that are a mere 8km from the coast, and is matured in neutral french oak barrels of 228 & 300 litres for 12 months. The grapes are hand-harvested in the cool early morning and crushed by foot following an overnight cold soak. Fermentation is with natural yeasts and is followed by a single daily punch down of the skins.
