The Dorset Wine Company is a quality focussed independent wine merchant based in the county town of Dorchester that supplies an eclectic and interesting selection of wines, spirits, beer and cigars through its retail shop in Poundbury.
Established in 2006 by Jonathan Charles, The Dorset Wine Company has built up a legion of loyal followers who appreciate that no nonsense advice and great wines needn’t cost the earth. With nearly 30 years’ experience in the wine trade, Jonathan has built up a host of valuable contacts and is passionate about the range of wines that are stocked and the small, dedicated producers that The Dorset Wine Company represents.
From our beautiful shop in the heart of Poundbury, Dorchester, our trained staff are on hand to offer down to earth advice on all aspects of buying and enjoying wine.
We know that shopping at a wine shop can be intimidating for some but we aim to make the experience as straightforward, relaxed and pleasurable as possible. We stock a huge range of wine, champagne, spirits and dessert wines and are confident that we have something for everyone.
We are passionate about wine and love the stories and characters that we come across in our day to day business. A large proportion of the wines and Champagne that we sell are made from small, family owned wineries and growers who are just as passionate as us about what they do. Whether it is a Malbec from Mendoza, or Godello from Galicia, we always look for wine which is interesting, has a true sense of place and speaks not only of the grape variety that it’s made from but the area in which it is grown.
We stock an extensive range of Organic, Biodynamic and Natural wine with many of our producers sharing our ethos that to make great wine you must first start with healthy vineyards and vines. Not all producers are certified organic, (this can be expensive/onerous), but choose to produce their wine and Champagne along organic, biodynamic or sustainable principles.
We like to feel that we have a wine for every occasion and a wine for every budget, whether it is a special gift for a birthday or anniversary, or something fruity and easy drinking to wash down a mid-week pasta. We are always happy to discuss the wines that we stock and to offer advice to match them to your needs.

2017 Extra Brut, D’Urberville Vineyard, Dorset
Champagne Blend
Perfectly sited on protected, south-facing, chalk soils, the D'Urberville vineyard produces perfectly ripe grapes for exuberant, fruit led English sparkling wines. We are proud to represent them and love the fact that it is less than a mile from the shop as the crow flies. Zesty, fresh and very easy drinking this is a great aperitif style of English fizz.

We are massive fans of the wonderful Priorat red wines from Marco Abella. The Clos Abella is particularly impressive with a strikingly perfumed bouquet, encompassing a myriad of red and dark fruits, fresh flowers, oak spices and liquorice. The complex palate shows black cherry, minerals, spice and chocolate and manages to be both subtle yet dense and harmonious with silky tannins, good balance, and a long, fresh finish.
