2019 Vinhas Velhas, Luis Pato,Dao & Bairrada

Bical

The Vinhas Velhas, Luis Pato goes through stainless steel fermentation which produces a refreshing white with Pear, Apple and white flower aromatics which carry through to the palate and are underpinned by a nutty, almond complexity.  Mix in a saline edge to the crisp, balanced acidity and you are left with a wonderful white which is evocative of the region.

2019/20 Chateau Tournefeuille, AC Lalande de Pomerol

Bordeaux Blend

Chateau Tourneuille is a perfectly sited 17 hectare Lalande de Pomerol vineyard a stones throw from some of Pomerols most famous addresses, notably Petrus and Gazin. The clay/gravel soils here produce wines with great intensity and balance.  The agiculture is a 50/50 mix of vineyars under biodynamic conversion with the balance being farmed sustainably with no chemical weed control or insecticide.  Rich with ripe tannins this fabulous wine is approachable in its youth but will age gracefully.

2020 Cabernet Franc Seleccion, Bodegas Rio Del Elorza, Mendoza

Cabernet Franc

The Verum Cabernet Franc Seleccion, Bodegas Rio Del Elorza has classic elements on the nose including wild strawberry, blackberry, pencil shavings and a hint of blackcurrant leaf.  Lovely ripe fruits with a hint of stalky/vegetal character but not too much greenness, instead offering more body and depth of fruit and a slight touch of herbal mint. The full-bodied palate is elegant with firm tannins but a vital balancing acidity. Cedar notes show from the use of French oak and the finish is dominated by bright red fruit and mocha spice.

2020 Morgon Cote de Py, Domaine Grange Cochard

Gamay

The Morgon Cote de Py is a wonderful example of hand crafted Cru Beaujolais from the prestigious Cote de Py plateau.  Made with organically grown, hand harvested grapes from a mixture of Granite and blue stone soils, the wine is made in the traditional semi-carbonic method with 2/3rds of the bunches being de-stemmed and 1/3rd left whole.  The wine is matured in a mixture of cask and old barrels and bottled with minimal sulphur without fining.  The result is a wonderfully complex wine that is expressive yet elegant and finely balanced.  Dark fruits and kirsch like characters mingle with dried herbs, liquorice and mineral undertones along with finely poised acidity which helps the wine remain focussed.  Delicious in it's youth, the Cote de Py also shows great ageing potential in the medium term and will continue to develop in complexity.

Chenin Blanc

The Carte d'Or Coteaux du Layon from Baumard has a very attractive honeyed nose, with lifted yellow fruits and more golden tropical elements such as mango, guava and pineapple. It has a particularly tropical character and a very fresh feel on the palate, with steely minerality and a zippy background acidity giving invigorating tartness to keep the wine luscious and buoyant. The rounded, approachable finish has good length.

The Flametree Chardonnay is beautifully balanced, displaying power and elegance in equal measure, plenty of vibrant citrus and stone fruit flavours and supportive oak courtesy of 9 months barrel ageing.  This is delicious now but will continue to develop for a couple of years.

Sauvignon Blanc

The Nanogyra Pouilly Fume (formerly 'Les Cornets') is a wonderful example of elegant, concentrated Sauvignon Blanc from the fossil rich Limestone vineyards of Pouilly-sur-Loire.  This terrific wine has a lovely weight on the palate with complex, even slightly exotic, elderflower and hedgerow fruit.  This delicious, unoaked white wine shows wonderful purity, is soft and rounded, and has a beautiful balance on the long, mineral-tinged finish.

Riesling

The Reiterpfad Riesling from the fabulous Hanewald-Schwerdt has flavours of dried herbs, pepper in combination with ripe yellow stone fruits and hints of fennel. Creamy and nutty in the mouth again herbs and fennel, fine acidity with a lot of structure.

Kurtatsch Kellerei Cantina is a medium sized co-operative with 190 members working 190 hectares in Alto Adige DOC in North East Italy that has been in existence for over a 100 years. The Schiava Sonntaler vines are between 60 and 90 years old with low yields but excellent quality fruit.

This is a delicious, more'ish white made mainly from Chasselas, the grape variety which is typical to the Canton of Vaud. Yves and Antoine de Mestral like to play around with it, making wine several different styles, of which this was our favourite.  Quite classic in style for Chasselas with a lovely balance of the creamy, fruity, floral and mineral palate. Rich and complex, this is a perfect wine to sip on its own, enjoy with fish and seafood.

2022 Rully 1er Cru Rabourcé, Domaine Belleville

Chardonnay

The Rabourcé vineyard in Rully is one of the highest and hottest in the region and is fully south-facing.  The Belleville vines are over 40 years old and are harvested early by hand to ensure the perfect balance of ripeness and acidity in this well exposed site. Following hand sorting in the winery the grapes are fermented in oak, 25% of which is new.  The result is a wonderfully generous wine with white fruits and mineral notes on the nose. The palate is rich and rounded yet with precise acidity and toasty, bready notes.  Surprisingly delicious in it's youth, this terrific white burgundy will start to drink beautifully from 2025 onwards.

Barbera

This classic Barbera is aged in stainless steel tanks, allowing the primary aromas of the varietal to shine through, including fruity notes such as cherry, orange peel, plum, and berries, all backed up by violet and elderberry floral notes.  Soft tannins and the marked acidity make this charming little wine a very versatile wine when it comes to food matching.
