Christoph and his brother Johannes have worked together since 2006 when they left their jobs to take over the family domaine in Saulheim, a little village inland from Oppenheim and the mighty Rhine. The vineyards lie on a mixture of light clay, limestone, red sandy loam and in places flint and schist. All vineyard management is now undertaken organically with a move to biodynamic imminent.

The 2023 Tierhoek Panther Pardus Pardus is a Rhone style blend made in collaboration with Lukas Van Loggerenberg.  The Tierhook 'In Collaboration With' is an idea that unifies some of  the most sought after grapes in the Cape with some of it's most talented winemakers.  Old Vine Grenache, along with newer plantings of  Syrah and Mouvedre are perfectly knit by Lukas Van Loggerenberg to give a wine that is elegant and fresh with restrained alcohol levels and wonderful purity of fruit.  Named after the Cape Leopard that roams these parts, this limited release wine marks the welcome return of Tierhook to the UK market.  Grab some while you can!

This amazing Viognier from Francois Villard has a pale yellow-gold hue in the glass, and offers powerful aromas of peach, apricot, honeysuckle, and orange blossom on the nose. The palate delivers typically rich, fleshy stone-fruit flavours with a compelling mineral streak, balanced by lively acidity and a subtle salinity that lingers beautifully. This beguiling wines is delicious now, but will continue to provide terrific drinking over the next 3-5 years at least.

The Big Fine Girl Riesling by Jeanneret is a pale yellow colour with flecks of green. The beautifully generous nose shows apple, apricot, lychee and pear with the palate following suit with masses of beautifully fresh, vibrant and zingy fruit; notably apples, lemons and blackcurrants at their mouth-watering best.  Gorgeous to drink on its own but with a weight of fruit that makes it an excellent match for food.

You don't see a great deal of red Beaumes de Venise in the UK so we're delighted to have uncovered this luscious red blend of Grenache (60%) and Syrah (40%) from the quality focussed Cave de Gigondas.  Complex and hugely enjoyable, this lovely medium to full-bodied wine mixes red berry and blueberry fruit, spice and licourice alongside menthol notes.  Enjoy this juicy, unoaked red wine now or over the next 4-5 years.

The crisp, fresh Bourgogne Chardonnay from Domaine Fournillon comes from vineyards close to Chablis and shares similar characteristics with citrus and mineral tinged fruit. There is some decent weight in the mid-palate with a creaminess to the texture, but no oak was harmed in the making of this wine.  Sophisticated, very drinkable and great value.

Dry yet exotic, this field blend is made from estate grown Muller Thurgau, Ribolla Gialla, Friulano, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio.  The elegant nose shows floral notes of jasmine and zesty lime, leading to delicate white spices, including white pepper and a touch of ginger. On the palate, this pristine white wine opens with vibrant freshness, leading to a crisp, bone-dry finish. This lovely Cotes du Rhone is a blend of Stephane Ogier's Rasteau and Cairanne vineyard and displays the typical elegance all his wines posess.  60% Grenache and 40% Syrah make up the blend and provide a medium to full bodied wine that is packed with plummy, herbal tinged fruit and beautifully poised acidity. Although this is approachable now with a decent decant, waiting until 2026/2027 will pay dividends and the wine should drink beautifully through to 2033.

The 2024 vintage is a fantastic one for Hunting Hill. Even though the yields were low, the fruit was pristine and beautifully ripe. The aroma of 2024 Hunting Hill is quite reticent in its youth, but you can get glimpses of the typical lemon/lime blossom fragrance and a touch of flintiness. The palate is concentrated and long showing the density of the low yield. This is a fabulous Hunting Hill that will show its best with 7-8 years of bottle age.
