This Mencia from Merayo is such a pretty wine, showing the characteristic perfume of the Mencia grape variety.  The vibrant nose is dominated by red berry and floral (mainly violet) notes.  The palate is broad and ripe, with more red berry fruits, floral and spice characters through to the long finish.

2024 Pavette Pinot Noir, California

Pinot Noir

Great value Pinot Noir isn't usually associated with California so we were over the moon to discover this beauty from Pavette in Napa.  This is a wonderfully easy drinking Pinot with ripe red cranberry, raspberry and cherry fruits, a touch of smokiness and lovely creamy texture.  Ageing takes place in a mixture of stainless steel (80%) and French oak (20%) for 10 months prior to bottling.

Georgia is considered to be the ‘cradle of wine', as 8,000 year-old indigenous Rkatsiteli grape seeds have been found in clay vessels. Vachnadziani was established in 1953and is one of the oldest wineries in Georgia. The 2024 Secateurs Red Blend by AA Badenhorst has to be amongst the best he's made.  Adi bought a neighbouring farm that he used to buy grapes from but now has pick of the crop for himself.  There's a hgher proportion of Cabernet in this release than usual, adding more cassis and dark fruit flavours to the mineral tinged spice of the Shiraz. Fuller than normal too, but by no means less approachable, with juicy tannins and terrific balance.

The Kloovenburg Village Red is a juicy, approachable blend of 59% Grenache, 32% Syrah, 14% Garnacha Peluda and 5% Mouvedre made by the talented Duncan Stuart.  Slight hints of oak compliment the bramble, strawberry and white pepper notes.  Terrific value, this is a must try for any Rhone Ranger looking to dip their toes in the sea of South African wines.

The Trastullo Primitivo is a wonderful example of this luscious grape variety.  Packed with blackberry and cherry fruit that is given a little extra depth courtesy of the use of a small amount of dried grapes from a secondary harvest.  The result is a beautifully balanced wine which is full and rich yet approachable and hugely enjoyable.
