Description
The 2024 Secateurs Red Blend by AA Badenhorst has to be amongst the best he’s made. Adi bought a neighbouring farm that he used to buy grapes from but now has pick of the crop for himself. There’s a hgher proportion of Cabernet in this release than usual, adding more cassis and dark fruit flavours to the mineral tinged spice of the Shiraz. Fuller than normal too, but by no means less approachable, with juicy tannins and terrific balance.
The style of the Secateurs Red changes from year to year as Shiraz vies with Cinsault to be dominant in the blend and in recent vintages the wines have become lighter and fresher.

2022 Lirac Rouge Cuvee Elie, Domaine La Loyanne
Rhone Blend
This relatively young family owned Domaine was created in 2001 by vignerons with 4 generations of vinegrowing and winemaking expertise under their belts. They own some seriously old vines in superb sites in the Southern Rhone on a mixture of soils of red sand, clay and the classic 'Galet' pebbles associated with Chateauneuf du Pape. As a result, their wines posess a wonderful depth and concentration.

Carignan
The Les Betes Rousses Rouge is very easy going with hints of spice, plums and red berries on the nose, it is beautfully rounded and balanced, with gentle tannins on the finish. A cracking mid-week red.

The Payten and Jones winery in Yarra Valley has never been one to follow the crowd and they specialise in minimal intervention, natural (in a good way), farming and winemaking, that translates into styles which are fruit forward and downright enjoyable.

2022 Gonzo Combat Rouge, Vandal Wine Company
Red Blend
The Gonzo Combat Rouge is a rather unusual field blend of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and Viognier which are co-fermented with whole bunch fermentation. The results is a beautifully supple yet plush and ripe red wine with sweet, spicy raspberry and cherry fruit. We've found it drinks best slightly chilled on a warm evening.
