2023 Mineralstein Dry Riesling, Gerd Stepp, Pfalz
Riesling
This is a textbook Riesling, made from grapes grown on the slopes of the Haardt mountains. Folloing a long, cool ferment (lasting 2 months), the wine spent a further 6 months on lees wihtout batonnage until bottling. The result is a typically vibrant Riesling with stone fruit, citrus and Lime fruit characters on the nose. The intense and textured palate combines minerality and structure with zesty, crisp acidity and a vibrant, fruity finish.

Pinot Noir
The Mineralstein Pinot Noir is generous, fruit led and amazingly approachable. Packed with ripe, red cherry fruit and slight spicy notes this wonderful wine is rounded, silky and almost dangerously easy to drink. Two thirds of the wine is aged in second and third use French Oak with the remainder aged in steel for freshness. This isn't an archetypal Spatburgunder, but more a classic Pinot with a German accent.

2023 Monbazillac ‘Jour de Fruit’ Domaine de l’Ancienne Cure
Semillon
The Domaine de l'Ancienne Cure Monbazillac is an aromatic and complex dessert wine that is blended from Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle and is among the best of the region. It's a rich, sweet 'liquoreux' wine with aromas of dried fruit and honey. It can be drunk as an apéritif or with blue cheese or fruit desserts. Christian Roche is one of the best producers in Monbazillac. Good alternative to Sauternes, botrytis affected (Noble Rot) Semillon, and is aged in new oak. Hints of sherbet and boiled sweets with a long complex finish.

The Monkey Morio by Hanewald-Schwerdt is a fabulous, fun summer wine from Stefan Schwerdt. It's made with a now unfashionable hybrid cross called Morio Muskat, which despite having no direct relationship to Muscat it is very similar in character. Wonderfully perfumed grapey nose with elderflower, apple and hints of pineapple.

2023 Montlouis Sec Clos du Breuil, Francois Chidaine
Chenin Blanc
Based in Montlouis, Francois Chidaine makes beguiling wines from Chenin Blanc and is largely regarded as the producer who put Montlouis 'back on the map'. The Clos du Breuil is made from a single parcel of low-yielding vines grown biodynamically on flinty/clay soils. Grapes are harvested by hand, with a spontaneous fermentation in large, old demi-muid oak barrels. The wine is then lees aged, without batonnage, for several months.

The Nanogyra Pouilly Fume (formerly 'Les Cornets') is a wonderful example of elegant, concentrated Sauvignon Blanc from the fossil rich Limestone vineyards of Pouilly-sur-Loire. We love the Predappio Sangiovese from Chiara Condello here at DWC. Made with the Sangiovese Piccolo clone, the grapes are small and produce concentrated wines when in the hands of such a talented winemaker. Chiara works organically and utilises long, slow fermentations to produce an intense, concentrated Sangiovese. Beautifully lifted and perfumed on the nose, the wine is both intense yet delicate, with cherry, plum and raspberry fruit on the palate and wonderfully poised acidity.

Jean-Christophe Bott is heir to the family tradition dating back to 1795, when his ancestor, Jean-Martin Geyl tended his vines and made his wine. Jean-Christophe Bott has been responsible for Domaine Bott-Geyl since 1993 and he converted the vineyards to be organic in 2000 and then biodynamic in 2002. In the vineyards he concentrates on low yields and in the cellars he oversees the vinification in the most natural and minimalist manner to produce wines with precise varietal character.

Wow, the Ried Anzenthal is a fabulous example of single vineyard Austrian Riesling. The complex nose is clean and fresh with peach and exotic fruits mingled with hints of honey and blossom. The palate is complex too with concentrated lime zest and more peach fruit along with distinct minerality. The finish rich and long yet surprisingly zesty and fresh. Drinking beautifully now, this tremendous wine has a long life ahead of it and will reward cellaring for at least a decade or maybe even two!

2023 Sancerre Rouge ‘La Louisonne’, Emile Balland

This tiny 6.5 hectare domaine in the Loire was started by Emile Balland in 1999. The Ballands have been making wines in the Loire since 1650 and his father was instrumental in achieving recognition for the young AOC Coteaux du Giennois in the 1980s.
