We are massive fans of the wonderful Priorat red wines from Marco Abella.  The Clos Abella is particularly impressive with a strikingly perfumed bouquet, encompassing a myriad of red and dark fruits, fresh flowers, oak spices and liquorice. The complex palate shows black cherry, minerals, spice and chocolate and manages to be both subtle yet dense and harmonious with silky tannins, good balance, and a long, fresh finish.

The Trois Cailloux by Idun is a classic Southern Rhone blend of Syrah/Mourvedre/Grenache that shows a deep ruby red with a violet rim.  Aromas of ripe currants, forest floor and tea leaf caressed by the spicy flavours of white pepper and coriander. Complex concentrated fruits, medium bodied with dense but silky tannins.

Red Blend

The Sao Expressiu is an intense, concentrated and complex blend of predominantly Garnatxa with Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah playing a supporting role.  Red and dark fruits mingle with balsamic notes and herbal undertones.  The palate is full and deep yet remains fresh courtesy of some lovely integrated acidity.  Although approachable after a decent decant and breathing, this terrific wine will continue to age gracefully for years to come.

The  Perelada 5 Finques Reserva is deep cherry red in the glass, with a nose brimming with red fruits and spices, some balsamic notes and a toasted background.  In the mouth it is fresh, well structured and balanced with prominent but well integrated tannins. Characterful and a pure pleasure to drink.

Tempranillo

The Alcaudon Rioja Crianza is a silky smooth, impeccably balanced red that marries fruit and oak impeccably.  Made from mostly hand harvested Tempranillo with a bit of Garnacha (15%) and Mazuelo (5%), this old vine red is fermented in stainless steel and then aged for 12 months in a mixture of French and American oak before resting in bottle for 6 months.

The Gloria S Garnacha is a beautiful example of modern Grenache, balancing elegant, silkily textured fruit with lightness that belies it's complexity.  This vibrant red wine is 50% whole bunch fermented and then aged in a mixture of used French Oak and clay Amphorae, before resting in bottle for 20 months prior to release.  Impecabbly balanced with soft tannins and bags of fruit, this is a delightful wine for lovers of first class Grenache.

Newfound Wines, a small family owned winery located in the Sierra Foothills was established in 2016 and is the very essence of 'New California'.  Matt and Audra were intent on intent on producing wine in the most sustainable way possible and tore out the existing vineyard that they purchased.  Amongst the mesaures they took was to enlist the help of 200 goats to graze the hillsides and to naturally compost the site, as well as creating a fire safe zone by lifting the densely forested canopy and cover cropped with a recipe of legumes, clovers and nitrogen fixing green manures.

The 2022 Les Creisses is an inviting blend of Syrah (30%), Cabernet (30%), Grenache (25%), Mouvedre (5%), Carignan (5%) and Marselan (5%).  Each variety is hand-harvested and vinified seperately before blending and ageing in a mixture of concrete vats and oak barrels for 15 to 18 months. The Luis Canas Rioja Crianza is a lovely ruby red colour and shows a clean nose with notes of balsamic and fine nuances of redcurrants, strawberries and raspberries with clean oak. Smooth, fruit and spice flavours with toasted oak, velvety cherry fruit and a slight hint of liquorice. Lasting rich fruit flavours with smooth round tannins. Complex and structured. A pleasant finish with red fruits and hints of eucalyptus.

This 100% Garnacha is elegant, refined and a perfect representation of the winemaking philosophy at Bodega Alegre Valganon.  Medium-bodied with enticing red and dark fruit characters, including cherry and raspberries, alongside a whiff of wood and spice. The finish has well-integrated, delicate tannins and a beautiful lift.  Complex yet approachable, this wonderful expression of Garnacha from the high altitude vineyards of Rioja Alta is a great wine to try if you have had enough of the big, gutsy modern styles packed with fruit and oak that have become very popular in recent years.

The SGZ by Silent Noise is an immensely enjoyable wine and is an unsual blend of Shiraz, Grenache & Zinfandel made in a very fresh, approachable style. Upfront, the aromas are boiled sweets and white cherries followed closely by a young vibrant perfume and notes of orange oil. On the palate there's bright red mouthfilling fruit with undertones of savoury dusty dark berry fruits and spice.

This Grenache Noir from Nadal Hainault is utterly delightful.  The pretty pale ruby colour hints at a wine that is light, but it's by no means a weed.  Softly textured in the mouth with bright red fruits and lovely balanced freshness on the finish. The eminently quaffable red wine is made with minimal intervention and no added sulphur.  It displays a beautiful lightness and delicacy and could easily take a bit of chilling down in the summer months.

The 2023 Tierhoek Panther Pardus Pardus is a Rhone style blend made in collaboration with Lukas Van Loggerenberg.  The Tierhook 'In Collaboration With' is an idea that unifies some of  the most sought after grapes in the Cape with some of it's most talented winemakers.  Old Vine Grenache, along with newer plantings of  Syrah and Mouvedre are perfectly knit by Lukas Van Loggerenberg to give a wine that is elegant and fresh with restrained alcohol levels and wonderful purity of fruit.  Named after the Cape Leopard that roams these parts, this limited release wine marks the welcome return of Tierhook to the UK market.  Grab some while you can!

2024 Côtes du Rhône ‘Le Temps est Venu’, Stephane Ogier, AOC

Rhone Blend

This lovely Cotes du Rhone is a blend of Stephane Ogier's Rasteau and Cairanne vineyard and displays the typical elegance all his wines posess.  60% Grenache and 40% Syrah make up the blend and provide a medium to full bodied wine that is packed with plummy, herbal tinged fruit and beautifully poised acidity. Although this is approachable now with a decent decant, waiting until 2026/2027 will pay dividends and the wine should drink beautifully through to 2033.

2024 Cotes du Rhone Rouge, Domaine de la Berthete, AC

Rhone Blend

Domaine de la Berthete have made a wonderfully approachable Cotes du Rhone that is packed with the warm, sunny flavours of the pebble strewn vineyards of the Southern Rhone.  50% Grenache and 30% Syrah are blended with a selection of other varieties from vines with an average age of 35 years old.  The result is a tantalising red that shows ripe black fruits, garrigue notes and a waft of spice on the long, satisfying finish.  Not a blockbuster, but packed with flavour, this terrific value red is a great match to roasted red meats.
