The nose displays elevation, vibrancy and fragrance, highlighted with cherry blossom, violets, and rose water. Threaded within is a core of blue fruits, mulberries and damson plums. White pepper, anise, cinnamon and clove provide extra layers of complexity. Delicate, woven, and layered, there are blackberries, black pastille and blueberries surrounding the palate. A fine graphite line through the mid-palate aligns with bright acidity and elegant tannin. The grapes for this wonderful Mencia come from the single vineyard (Paraje) of Mata Los Pardos. With an average age of 90 years old, the low yielding vines produce fruit of exceptional quality and complexity. The wine shows lots of red and black fruits, notably blackberry, plum and cherry with mineral tinged herbal notes and a toasted spice character courtesy of the barrel fermentation and ageing (12 months in 500ltr French oak). This is a wine that shows wonderful purity of fruit, a silky texture and a fair bit of understated power to boot!

The Rizzardi Pojega is an utterly delicious example of this style of red wine, showing a wonderful depth of fruit and terrific balance. Made from a traditional blend of Corvina, Rondinella, Corvinone and Merlot the wine shows great concentration of dark and red fruits, but also lovely freshness and a harmonious finish. The addition of 10% Amarone (which now has to be done by law for Ripasso's) simply adds to the complexity without detracting from the elegant freshness which seems to be the hallmark of the wines from this historic estate. This is the kind of wine which doesn't disappoint, no matter what your taste.

Great value Pinot Noir isn't usually associated with California so we were over the moon to discover this beauty from Pavette in Napa. This is a wonderfully easy drinking Pinot with ripe red cranberry, raspberry and cherry fruits, a touch of smokiness and lovely creamy texture. Ageing takes place in a mixture of stainless steel (80%) and French oak (20%) for 10 months prior to bottling.
