The 1998 Musar Red is an elegant and fragrant Cinsault dominated vintage, mainly due to the cooler conditions. It shows wonderfully developed gamey aromas, is well structured and has a vein of finely poised acidity running through it. Medium bodied with great length. The vintage was, by Lebanese standards, cold, with rainy weather that lasted until June (resulting in late flowering), leading to a summer that was sunny and dry.

Château Grandis became a family run estate in 1857 and the vineyards are made up of a modest 10 hectares which enables the family to maintain the strictest high standards both in the vineyard and the cellar. In 2005 Brice Vergez took over the running of the estate and has continued to practice the techniques of hand harvesting, hand pruning and racking from barrel to barrel. He also prefers ploughing between the rows of vines rather than the systematic use of herbicides, promoting soil health wherever possible.

2016 Chateau Cambon La Pelouse, Cru Bourgeois Haut Medoc

The Château and it’s vineyards are on the outskirts of Macau and counts the Margaux estate of Giscours and Cantemerle as neighbours. With an average annual production of 250,000 bottles, the estate is planted with 52% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot to a vine density of 7,000 vines per hectare, with an average age of 30 years for the vines. The terroir is composed of sandy gravels which provides effective drainage. This ensures a consistent production of elegant medium-bodied wines which have been praised by Robert Parker as “one of my favorite estates from the southern part of the Médoc”. This historic estate has produced a very classic claret, but with lovely modern dense dark fruit, soft integrated tannins and a ripe, clean, bold Bordeaux finish. Whilst Cambon is always a very good Cru Bourgeois, from this 2016 vintage the Châteaux has surpassed itself in terms of a price to quality ratio. The 2016 vintage of Musar is a deep ruby in colour with high viscosity. Red cherries, plums, carob and figs dominate the nose with a hint of eastern spice. Kirsch and plums follow through to the palate with blackcurrant and chocolate. The tannins are velvety soft and this wine has a lot of depth and fruit concentration with a long finish.

The Finca Moncloa Tinto is a medium- high intensity with cherry red tones and persistent legs, with intense aromas of ripe red/ black fruits such as blackberry, blueberry and plum. It also carries some floral notes and spice such as black pepper, clove, vanilla and balsamic, whihc intensifies in the glasss. As well as this, you will also fine some fine notes of oak. On the palate it is well balanced with good acidity and a slightly sweet entrance. This is a smooth wine with body and long, round tannins.

Chapoutiers wonderful Hermitage Monier de la Sizeranne is characterised by elegance and restraint, showing red fruits with hints of liquorice on the nose. The medium bodied palate is elegant, if a touch broody, with blackcurrant and raspberry fruit characters and a spicy youthfulness. Coming from a mixture of vineyard sites with different exposures and soil types ranging from granite to silt via alluvial, gravelly soils, this is a complex yet open and forward style with soft tannins. 85% of the wine is fermented in oak giving spicy, woody notes with the remainder fermented in concrete tank providing freshness and the preservation of mineral characteristics.

It’s a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 20% Carignan from vines of up to 45 years old and shows plenty of rounded fruit, a balanced spicy backbone with underlying minerality and impeccable finish.
