2024 Secateurs Red Blend, AA Badenhorst, Swartland

The 2024 Secateurs Red Blend by AA Badenhorst has to be amongst the best he's made.  Adi bought a neighbouring farm that he used to buy grapes from but now has pick of the crop for himself.  There's a hgher proportion of Cabernet in this release than usual, adding more cassis and dark fruit flavours to the mineral tinged spice of the Shiraz. Fuller than normal too, but by no means less approachable, with juicy tannins and terrific balance.

Don't be put off by the slightly darker colour of the Sunset Rose by Chateau Ksara.  This Lebanese icon is made from a blend of Cabernet Franc and Syrah that sees 10-14 hours skin contact and fermented at 18 degrees in stainless steel.  Packed with red berry fruit and hints of spice, this is a terrific rose to try if you fancy a change from the usual.

The Kloovenburg Village Red is a juicy, approachable blend of 59% Grenache, 32% Syrah, 14% Garnacha Peluda and 5% Mouvedre made by the talented Duncan Stuart.  Slight hints of oak compliment the bramble, strawberry and white pepper notes.  Terrific value, this is a must try for any Rhone Ranger looking to dip their toes in the sea of South African wines.

The Wolftrap White has a nose that is bold, intense, and rich with stone fruit aromas of peach, nectarine and yellow plum as well as gentle whiffs of angelica, spice, and fresh ginger. The 2024 Tierhoek Chardonnay is made in collaboration with Hamilton Russell winemaker Emul Ross and is the first non Hamilton Russell wine to be made in the cellars (we think).  Produced from 20 year old vines that are starting to show their true potential, this fabulous Chardonnay is fermented in a mixture of seasoned French oak and terracotta eggs, before being transferred into barrel and amphora for ageing.

The Notteri is a terrific example of Vermentino di Sardegna. Made with free run juice that is fermented at cool temperatures before resting on it's fine lees for 60 days.  The result is a wine which shows an intense nose that is fresh with stone fruit and floral notes.  The palate is soft and dry with more intensity and finishing on a pleasing bitter note.  This elegant white is a terrific wine to be enjoyed with seafood, especially shellfish, and lighter mediterranean starters.
