This second wine of Chateau Cantemerle always represents terrific value, especially in great vintages like 2019.  Classic fruit notes of blackcurrant, plum and red cherry mingle with tobacco, dark chocolate and subtle menthol.  The nicely balanced palate shows more fruit with the addition of pepper and spice, balanced tannins and fresh acidity.  Fruit forward and very enjoyable now.

Chasselas

This is a delicious, more'ish white made mainly from Chasselas, the grape variety which is typical to the Canton of Vaud. Yves and Antoine de Mestral like to play around with it, making wine several different styles, of which this was our favourite.  Quite classic in style for Chasselas with a lovely balance of the creamy, fruity, floral and mineral palate. Rich and complex, this is a perfect wine to sip on its own, enjoy with fish and seafood.

2019 Pais Salvaje, Bouchon, Maule

Pais

Bouchon are 4th generation viticultutralists situated in the Maule Valley. Current incumbent Julio Bouchon and his children carry on the family tradition of creating distinctive, terroir-driven wines.  The Pais Salvaje is a wine which celebrates the native grape of Chile which up until relatively recently was considered a workhorse variety tha most wienreis were grubbing up in favout of international varities.  This fascinating wine comes from wild Pais vines which have grown unchecked with a wooded area and now requires hand harvesting on ladders, some of which are 5 meters tall.

The Breitenbach 6 Puttonyus Tokaji has a wonderfully deep golden colour and is very inviting.  The wine is exotic and rich with dense, complex apricot and orange marmalade fruit characters which are supported by an exotic, floral nose.  Mid-weight and finely honeyed with beautifully poised acdity and spice on the long balanced finish.

The 2019 Niepoort Vintage Port has a brilliant appearance with a dark purple rim and concentrated depth of colour. The aroma is fine and subdued with only a hint of primary dark fruits and some spice. The true potential and style of this wine really comes together on the palate with wonderful integration of dark fruits with a grainy tannic structure, pairing volume with amazing balance and elegance and an impressive finish. In conclusion, the primary fruit on the palate is appealing at this stage, but it’s the balanced tannic structure which indicates great ageing potential for the future.

The 50 & 50 is a blend of 50% Merlot and 50% Sangiovese and has a deep, ruby red color, producing aromas of red berry fruits and black cherries which intertwine with scents of sweet tobacco and mediterranean herbs. The flavour is rich, enveloping and long lingering with lots of ripe fruit and warm notes of baking spices.

The nose displays elevation, vibrancy and fragrance, highlighted with cherry blossom, violets, and rose water. Threaded within is a core of blue fruits, mulberries and damson plums. White pepper, anise, cinnamon and clove provide extra layers of complexity. Delicate, woven, and layered, there are blackberries, black pastille and blueberries surrounding the palate. A fine graphite line through the mid-palate aligns with bright acidity and elegant tannin. Gentle and balanced stalk components fill out the mouthfeel and lead on to a long, lingering and savoury finish.

The Astral de Chateau Puybarbe offers tremendous value and is packed with opulent ripe cassis and dark berry fruit, hints of spice and wafts of vanilla.  The wine is predominantly Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon and small amounts of Malbec and Cabernet Franc in support.  The grapes are grown sustainably without the use of harmful pesticides in the vineyard.

The Viberti Buon Padre is a blend of 10 Barolo Cru's that are fermented and partially aged seperately before being blended and aged again in truncated conical vats of untoasted French oak for 3 years prior to bottling.  Each cru is selected to provide the perfect balance of fruit, structure and longevity to make a classic Barolo.  The result is a Barolo that expresses vibrant acidity, aromatic breadth and refined tannin.
