The Sao Expressiu is an intense, concentrated and complex blend of predominantly Garnatxa with Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah playing a supporting role.  Red and dark fruits mingle with balsamic notes and herbal undertones.  The palate is full and deep yet remains fresh courtesy of some lovely integrated acidity.  Although approachable after a decent decant and breathing, this terrific wine will continue to age gracefully for years to come.

The Rapsansi Red is made from a blend of Xinomavro, Krasato and Stavroto and shows a perfumed nose of roses and red fruit compote with hints of peppery spice and tobacco.  The palate is fresh and lively with macerated cherries and red plums fruit characters.  Elegant and medium-bodied with moderately firm but fine tannins, reminiscent of powdered cocoa.

The vineyards lie on a mixture of light clay, limestone red sandy loam and in places flint and schist. All vineyard management is now undertaken organically with a move to biodynamic imminent.

The palate is rich yet dynamic with lots of juicy red fruits, savoury notes and a long, balanced finish showing more spice and smokey notes.

2021 Jackot, Bodegas Piedra Negra, Arroyo Grande, Uco Valley

Friulano

The Jackot from Bodegas Piedra is made with the northern Italian grape variety Friulano.  This delicate white has aromas of herb tinged fresh Lime on the nose and a gentle palate which has a lovely creamy texture with whiffs of oak on the finish.  The hand harvested fruit is fermented at a cool 14 - 17 degrees in a mixture of stainless steel (70%) and old oak barrels (30%).  Following fermentation the wine is aged on fine lees in concrete eggs for 3 months with weekly batonnage (stirring) to give the wine added texture, prior to a further 6 - 8 months in old oak prior to release.

The Domaine de l'Ancienne Cure Monbazillac is an aromatic and complex dessert wine that is blended from Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle and is among the best of the region. It's a rich, sweet 'liquoreux' wine with aromas of dried fruit and honey. It can be drunk as an apéritif or with blue cheese or fruit desserts. Christian Roche is one of the best producers in Monbazillac. Good alternative to Sauternes, botrytis affected (Noble Rot) Semillon, and is aged in new oak. Hints of sherbet and boiled sweets with a long complex finish.

2021 Pourquoi Faire Sans Blanc?, Domaine Serol, Vin de France

Chenin Blanc

Following a disastrous harvest in France many producers looked for parcels of fruit which they could make wine from in order to have something to sell from the 2021 vintage.  Domaine Serol have a small vineyard of Chenin Blanc grapes on the highest part of their estate, grown on granite soils.  This is a deliciously refreshing white with a core of ripe honeyed, citrus fruit that is just starting to open up.  The finish is super clean with thirst quenching acidity on the long balanced finish.  Drinking beautifully now, especially with food, this will continue to develop for a few years from vintage.
