The Gospel Green Rose is an innovative 'Cyder' made from 80% dessert apples and 20% cooking apples, topped up with a dosage of Pinot Noir to give colour and complexity.  The result is a wonderfully elegant, fresh and clean sparkling cider that provides an alternative to Champagne and sparkling wines. Subtle, elegant and showing great finesse, this is a drink to sip and savour.

2017 Granito Cabernet/Carmenere, Julio Bouchon, Maule Valley

Cabernet Sauvignon

Bouchon are 4th generation viticultutralists situated in the Maule Valley. Current incumbent Julio Bouchon and his children carry on the family tradition of creating distinctive, terroir-driven wines.  The Granito wines are micro-terroir wines made from old vines which are dry farmed on ancient granite soils.  The roots of the old vines need to dig deep in order to find nutrients which translates into concentrated, complex flavours in the grapes.

2017 Hermitage Monier de la Sizeranne, Chapoutier, AOP

Syrah/Shiraz

Chapoutiers wonderful Hermitage Monier de la Sizeranne is characterised by elegance and restraint, showing red fruits with hints of liquorice on the nose.  The medium bodied palate is elegant, if a touch broody, with blackcurrant and raspberry fruit characters and a spicy youthfulness.  Coming from a mixture of vineyard sites with different exposures and soil types ranging from granite to silt via alluvial, gravelly soils, this is a complex yet open and forward style with soft tannins.  85% of the wine is fermented in oak giving spicy, woody notes with the remainder fermented in concrete tank providing freshness and the preservation of mineral characteristics.

Since then, Domingos and his wines have gained critical acclaim. 2017 Museum Release Marsanne, Tahbilk, Nagambie Lakes, Victoria

Marsanne

Tahbilk are a Carbon Neutral winery and legendary producers of Marsanne, not just in Australia but worldwide.  Their plantings of this beguiling grape variety are the world's largest single holding, some of which were planted in 1927 and rank as some of the oldest around.  The Museum Release Marsanne has an expressive nose of honeysuckle and hot buttered toast.  The palate is rich, nutty and honeyed yet has a vibrant citrus freshness on the finish.  This is a true 'terroir wine' which sings of the unique climate in this part of Victoria and shows wonderful varietal character.   This Marsanne is delicious now but will continue to develop in complexity up to 2026.

The 2018 Chateau Musar is a rich and concentrated style, partly due to a 3 day heatwave in August when temperatures reached 40 degrees celcius! Dried cherries, plum and dark berry fruits dominate the nose along with leather, tobacco and spice.  The palate is concentrated showing rich, raisin like depth and tremendous length.  This powerful Musar shows a great deal of development now but will continue to develop for years to come.

Villa Montepaldi is a fabulous renaissance property, once owned by Leonardo di Medici consisting of 300 hectares of vineyards and olive groves that is now owned by The University of Florence, and doubles as the field station for the Oenology department. It is run as a non-profit organisation and, as such, the wines are phenomenally good value. The winemaking is overseen by Italy’s leading consultant in Carlo Ferrini and the wines themselves are traditional in style with beautiful violet aromas bursting with cherry fruit. The Corryton Burge Shiraz is a rich, soft and subtle Australian Shiraz showing deep ruby red with purple hues.  The nose has plenty of strawberry, raspberry and vanilla aromas. Richly fruited on the palate with forward characters of raspberry and plum alongside a soft toasty oak influence that enhances the vanilla and spice. Subtle tannins leave the palate quite moreish and a delight to keep coming back to.

The collaboration between the ‘bad boy’ of Bordeaux Jean-Luc Thunevin and Roussillon ‘local boy’ Jean-Roger Calvet has produced a range of wines that are not only spectacular but are exceptional value for money. There’s no hiding the class of this little gem from Maury, a commune that sits at the foot of the Pyrenees.  It’s a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 20% Carignan from vines of up to 45 years old and shows plenty of rounded fruit, a balanced spicy backbone with underlying minerality and impeccable finish.
