Description

The Alves de Sousa family has been producing wines for several generations, initially suppling fruit and wine to other port companies. When Domingos Alves de Sousa inherited his family’s quintas in 1987, he began producing wine under the family name. After studying viticulture in Bordeaux and his native Portugal, acquiring additional properties and constructing a modern cellar at Quinta da Gaivosa, he released his first vintage in 1991. Since then, Domingos and his wines have gained critical acclaim. Notably, he was named “Producer of the Year” by Revista de Vinhos in 1999 and 2007, and is the only person to have won this prestigious award twice.

Deep ruby colour, showing flavours of dark plums and liquorice on the nose.  Heaps of macerated cherries and dark chocolate notes on the palate, with firm but well integrated tannins.  This amazing LBV is full-bodied but very smooth with a long, harmonious finish.

Rainwater Reserva, Barbeito, Madeira

Verdelho

This blend of 80% Tinta Negra and 20% Verdelho is aged in cask for 5 years naturally, without the addition of caramel and is designed to mimic the 'Rainwater Style' of Madeira. The origins of this style are ambiguous, (depending on who you speak to), but it is thought to derive from when the barrels were left outside and the wine inside took on a particular characteristic having been lashed by the Atlantic rains.  What we can be certain of is that this is a stunning style medium dry Madeira that has complex flavours of almonds, caramel, nuts and candied fruits.  The finish is long and balanced with terrific acidity.

2017 Late Bottled Vintage, Niepoort, Douro Valley

Douro Blend

The 2017 Late Bottled Vintage Niepoort is a dark ruby colour with a red rim, this LBV brings dark chocolate aromas to the foreground, along with fruits of the forest and a spicy character. It offers medium weight on the palate with firm structure and acidity providing superb freshness and ending in a spicy, warming finish. The wine is drinking beautifully now, with great freshness and primary fruit in evidence, but it will also benefit from further cellaring for a couple of decades.

White Rabbit Dry White Port, Niepoort

Douro Blend

Made from wines which are between 3 and 5 years old, the Niepoortland White Rabbit isn't bone dry and therefore very versatile as an aperitif on it's own or mixed with tonic for a longer drink.  White Golden brown in colour with a delightful aroma of nuts and almonds which follows through on the palate with a fresh concentrated spirity finish.
