Description

The Alves de Sousa family has been producing wines for several generations, initially suppling fruit and wine to other port companies. When Domingos Alves de Sousa inherited his family’s quintas in 1987, he began producing wine under the family name. After studying viticulture in Bordeaux and his native Portugal, acquiring additional properties and constructing a modern cellar at Quinta da Gaivosa, he released his first vintage in 1991. Since then, Domingos and his wines have gained critical acclaim. Notably, he was named “Producer of the Year” by Revista de Vinhos in 1999 and 2007, and is the only person to have won this prestigious award twice.

Deep ruby colour, showing flavours of dark plums and liquorice on the nose.  Heaps of macerated cherries and dark chocolate notes on the palate, with firm but well integrated tannins.  This amazing LBV is full-bodied but very smooth with a long, harmonious finish.

A brick-red appearance with some light orange tinges leads into a fine slightly smokey aroma with hints of dried fruits. The palate is refreshing, with wonderful acidity and hints of dried apricots and crystallised fruit, leading to a lengthy mellow spirit driven finish.

2019 Vintage Port, Niepoort, Douro Valley

Douro Blend

The 2019 Niepoort Vintage Port has a brilliant appearance with a dark purple rim and concentrated depth of colour. The aroma is fine and subdued with only a hint of primary dark fruits and some spice. The true potential and style of this wine really comes together on the palate with wonderful integration of dark fruits with a grainy tannic structure, pairing volume with amazing balance and elegance and an impressive finish. In conclusion, the primary fruit on the palate is appealing at this stage, but it’s the balanced tannic structure which indicates great ageing potential for the future.

Touriga Nacional

The Quinta Boa Esperanca Rose is a  pretty salmon pink colour, which  leads to fine and delicate aromas of red fruits and herbal hints.  The palate is fresh, structured and intense, with a very long, refreshing finish. This is a great wine to try if you fancy a change from the Provencal style.

Alicante Bouschet

The Tonel Mouchao has aromas of deep black fruits, dark sweetness, dry fruits, combined with the freshness of mint and eucalyptus. On the palate it is complex, being  full and rich with intense, spicy notes to the warm cocoa, tobacco and black fruits.  Decadent, different and one to enjoy post dinner in good company.
