Chateau Angludet is one of the oldest properties in the Medoc and is owned by the Sichel family, 6th generation Bordeaux Negociants and part owners of Chateau Palmer.  The wines from Angludet come from vineyards which are all classified as Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel and are consistently excellent.  The superb 2010 comes hot on the heels of the terrific 2009 and although expressive and open now, it will continue to develop very nicely.

2011 Chateau Grandis, Cru Bourgeois Haut Medoc

Château Grandis became a family run estate in 1857 and the vineyards are made up of a modest 10 hectares which enables the family to maintain the strictest high standards both in the vineyard and the cellar. In 2005 Brice Vergez took over the running of the estate and has continued to practice the techniques of hand harvesting, hand pruning and racking from barrel to barrel.  He also prefers ploughing between the rows of vines rather than the systematic use of herbicides, promoting soil health wherever possible.

We have a soft spot for the incredible Chenin Blancs from Baumard and gems such as this truly spectacular wine highlight the quality of winemaking at this Domaine.  Baumard eschew traditional trellising methods for this part of the Loire and have also flown in the face of tradition by switching excluisively to screwcaps for their range.  The Quarts de Chaume vineyard enjoys a superb terroir and a unique situation producing wines of rare elegance.  This remarkable wine is wonderfuly textured and manages to comine power and clarity alongside richness and precision. 2015 Pernand-Vergelesses ‘Les Combottes’, Louis Jadot

The Les Combottes vineyard sits high on the Pernand-Vergelesses hill and is perfectly sited to produce wines with freshness and balance.  This perfectly mature white burgundy is complex with citrus and stone fruit aromas on the nose which follows through to the soft, rounded palate that is underpinned by elegant, mineral-tinged acidity.  Although not cheap, this is an excellent value, mature burgundy from vineyards which neighbour Corton.

The Tonel Mouchao has aromas of deep black fruits, dark sweetness, dry fruits, combined with the freshness of mint and eucalyptus. 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva Canova, Ca dei Maghi

Ca dei Maghi is a small yet perfectly formed winery in the hills which focusses on quality over quantity.  The Amarone Riserva Canova is a stunning, and very classic style Amarone made in the traditional way with grapes which are dried in huts over the winter.  Following fermetation the wine spends 60 months ageing in barrel providing beautifully integrated wood, spice and fruit.  This decadent Amarone is rich and warming with the typical plum, cherry and choclate characteristics one would expect on the wonderfully silky palate.  The finish is very long and warming - one for those long winter evenings!

2016 Chateau Treytins, Montagne Saint-Emilion

Chateau Treytins are a little better known for their Lalande de Pomerol, but have been making wine in Montagne Saint Emilion since 1998.  This fruit forward and approachable claret is made with 90% Merlot with the remainder being Cabernet Franc and other varieties, and is fermented in stainless steel, followed by a long maceration and bottling after 18 months of ageing.  Fresh with elegant red fruit notes and delicate tannins.
