Description
We were utterly bowled over when we first tasted the amazing Rioja Malvasia from Bodegas Amaren. Situated in the highest part of the Rioja region, Amaren is the premium winery of the Luis Canas stable, producing exceptional wines that are a raw expression of the weathered vineyards and old vines in the Rioja Alavesa.
The grapes for this white come from the El Pomal vineyard planted in 1912 and are from the Malvasia Riojana clone. The harvest is manual with grape by grape selection taking place in the winery prior to fermentation in concrete eggs. The wine is then aged in the same egg on it’s fine lees for 14 months with a weekly battonage (stirring) of the lees to promote texture and complexity. No oak is harmed in the making of this wine, which spends 24 months in bottle (in this case magnum), prior to release.
The results are exceptional, delivering an enticing wine with great aromatic complexity. The nose offers complex floral aromas, hints of spice and brioche alongside concentrated pineapple and pear fruit. These complex flavours carry through to the righly textured palate that manages to be both intense and bold whilst retaining elegance and class from start to very long finish. Simply delicious!

2023 Riesling Sekt Trocken, Hanewald-Schwerdt, Pfalz
Riesling
The Hanewald-Schwerdt Riesling Sekt Trocken has a steely lemon tinged nose with red apple and peach underpinned by zesty lime acidity, resulting in a lovely refreshing style. This is by no means bone dry though, and with 23grams of residual sugar this a fruitier style that is a great alternative to Prosecco for those looking for something a little different.
