2021 Lioco Mendocino Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir

The Lioco Mendocino Pinot Noir is made up of grapes from different vineyard sites in Mendocino.  The vintage was characterised by drought resulting in concentrated grapes that packed bold fruit.  Notes of black raspberry and violet mingle with fresher red fruits and wild coastal berries.  Exuberant, open and a pure joy to drink, this delicious Pinot Noir is fermented in open top fermenters, with 10% whole bunch clusters, and regular punch downs over two weeks.  Following fermentation the wine is then aged in a mixture of Neutral French oak and steel for 8 months.

Viura

The CVNE Monopole Classico Rioja Blanco is a truly unique style of white Rioja that was brought back into production in 2014 to celebrate the centenary of the CVNE brand. 100% Viura with a small amount of Manzanilla added to the barrels which adds a saline complexity to the vibrant Viura fruit. Straw yellow in colour with slight golden hints. The complex nose shows scents of pear, apple, white currant and white flowers underpinned by slightly spicy dried fruits. On the palate there is salinity (Manzanilla influence) and an elegant acidity which provide freshness, on the long, thirst quenching finish.

The Orange Kisi from Tiko Estate in Eastern Georgia is a traditionally made Orange wine with fermentation taking place on skins in clay Qvevri.  The wine remains on it's skins for 6 months following the fermentation and as a result shows incredible concentration and a beautiful weight balanced with aromatic, ripe stone fruit characters, notably apricot and peach.  There is some tannic structure too making this a superb match to both eastern mediterranean cuisine (take note Ottolenghi fans), and also spicier Asian dishes.

The Petali Liatiko from Diamantakis is a pale red colour with cherry highlights. Aromas of raisins, caramel, fig, red-black fruits like strawberry, plum blackberry, which are followed by scents of spice like cinnamon and clove. The Reserve du Couvent from Chateau Ksara is a great value, approachable red from Lebanon's oldest winery.  The Gallic influence extends to both Bordeaux and the Rhone Valley, with 40% Syrah being blended with 30% each of Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc.  The result is an approachable, medium to full-bodied red that shows dark cherry and blackberry fruit laced with savoury black pepper spice and a soft lik of vanilla.  Charismatic and great value.

The Les Chirats Syrah/Viognier is a wonderfully floral and elegant blend of 90% Syrah and 10% Viognier from vineyards around Saint Joseph.  The practice of adding a small proportion of Viognier to Syrah is common in Cote Rotie and helps to add softness and aromatics to the Syrah from this part of the Northern Rhone.  This wonderfully friendly and approachable red wine is fermented on Condrieu lees which gives the wine even more aromatics. Enticing blue and black fruits on the nose are joined on the palate by more savoury leathery notes and hints of peppery spice.  The mineral-tinged finish is finely poised showing evidence of the granite soils.
