Chateau Angludet is one of the oldest properties in the Medoc and is owned by the Sichel family, 6th generation Bordeaux Negociants and part owners of Chateau Palmer. The wines from Angludet come from vineyards which are all classified as Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel and are consistently excellent. The superb 2010 comes hot on the heels of the terrific 2009 and although expressive and open now, it will continue to develop very nicely.

2011 Chateau Grandis, Cru Bourgeois Haut Medoc

Château Grandis became a family run estate in 1857 and the vineyards are made up of a modest 10 hectares which enables the family to maintain the strictest high standards both in the vineyard and the cellar. In 2005 Brice Vergez took over the running of the estate and has continued to practice the techniques of hand harvesting, hand pruning and racking from barrel to barrel. He also prefers ploughing between the rows of vines rather than the systematic use of herbicides, promoting soil health wherever possible.

Baumard eschew traditional trellising methods for this part of the Loire and have also flown in the face of tradition by switching excluisively to screwcaps for their range. The Quarts de Chaume vineyard enjoys a superb terroir and a unique situation producing wines of rare elegance. This remarkable wine is wonderfuly textured and manages to comine power and clarity alongside richness and precision. Complex with floral bouquets and notes of citrus and orchard fruit with impeccable acidity, this is a wine to savour.

2015 Bollinger La Grande Annee, Ay

Only made in the best years, the Bollinger Grande Annee is a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay fermented in oak. The 2015 has stone fruits, plum and honey on the nose initially, with more red fruits coming through. Plump, rich and generous on the palate with red fruits and plum giving way to citrus acidity and an elegant vein of minerality. Enjoyable now, this terrific wine will age gracefully for years to come.

2016 Chateau Treytins, Montagne Saint-Emilion

Chateau Treytins are a little better known for their Lalande de Pomerol, but have been making wine in Montagne Saint Emilion since 1998. This fruit forward and approachable claret is made with 90% Merlot with the remainder being Cabernet Franc and other varieties, and is fermented in stainless steel, followed by a long maceration and bottling after 18 months of ageing. Fresh with elegant red fruit notes and delicate tannins.

Chapoutiers wonderful Hermitage Monier de la Sizeranne is characterised by elegance and restraint, showing red fruits with hints of liquorice on the nose. The medium bodied palate is elegant, if a touch broody, with blackcurrant and raspberry fruit characters and a spicy youthfulness. Coming from a mixture of vineyard sites with different exposures and soil types ranging from granite to silt via alluvial, gravelly soils, this is a complex yet open and forward style with soft tannins. 85% of the wine is fermented in oak giving spicy, woody notes with the remainder fermented in concrete tank providing freshness and the preservation of mineral characteristics.

The collaboration between the ‘bad boy’ of Bordeaux Jean-Luc Thunevin and Roussillon ‘local boy’ Jean-Roger Calvet has produced a range of wines that are not only spectacular but are exceptional value for money. There’s no hiding the class of this little gem from Maury, a commune that sits at the foot of the Pyrenees. It’s a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 20% Carignan from vines of up to 45 years old and shows plenty of rounded fruit, a balanced spicy backbone with underlying minerality and impeccable finish.

2019 Bordeaux Blanc Sec, Chateau Saransot-Dupre

Chateau Saransot-Dupre is a favourably sited 17 hectares property that lies between Fourcas Dupré and Fourcas Hosten in Listrac. Due to Listrac’s cooler temperatures, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are favoured over Cabernet Sauvignon to form the majority of the blend, helping them achieve optimum ripeness. Much like Chateau Fourcas Hosten, the wines have improved year on year since 2010 and the property were put on the radar thanks to a certain Robert Parker hailing the 2010 vintage as 'classed growth quality'. High praise indeed!
