This terrific red comes from Nebbiolo grapes grown in the Valtellina Superiore area in the districts of Berbenno, Sondrio, Montagna e Teglio, between 350 and 500 metres above sea level. The best quality grapes are dried for 2 months in the “fruttaio”, a ventilated area on the top floor of the CasaClima Wine cellar.

2018 Vom Kalk, Weingut Weninger, Weinland

Red Blend

The Vom Kalk from Weingut Weninger is a fabulous natural red wine made with a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sankt Laurent.  After a manual harvest the grapes are destemmed and fermented with ambient yeasts in cement tanks. The wine is then aged in a mixture of cement tanks and 500 litre wooden barrels and bottled without filtration or fining with just a minimum of sulphur.

Bouchon are 4th generation viticultutralists situated in the Maule Valley. Current incumbent Julio Bouchon and his children carry on the family tradition of creating distinctive, terroir-driven wines.  The Pais Salvaje is a wine which celebrates the native grape of Chile which up until relatively recently was considered a workhorse variety tha most wienreis were grubbing up in favout of international varities.  This fascinating wine comes from wild Pais vines which have grown unchecked with a wooded area and now requires hand harvesting on ladders, some of which are 5 meters tall.

2020 ‘O Font’ Les Deux Cols, Vin de France

Grenache Blend

Les Deux Cols is a joint venture between Ireland's leading Rhone importer, Simon Tyrell and Charles Derain, one time Sommelier to Alain Ducasse at Le Louis XV in Paris.  This Grenache Noir dominated blend is whole bunch and foot trodden, natural yeast fermented in concrete tanks and then matured in a mixture of old barriques and larger demi-muid barrels.  Pale in the glass, this is fresh and easy with red fruits and a hint of spice.  Hand harvesting takes place at least a week earlier than the neighbouring properties allowing for a fresher style, and all vineyards are either organic or in conversion with some biodynamic practices in use.

The Mencia 'Silk' from Bodegas Adria in Bierzo is an intense garnet colour in the core with youthful purple edges. Interesting and complex on the nose with red fruits together with balsamic touches and aromas vanilla. There's a lovely balance of fruit, acidity and gentle tannins on the finish.

The colour is a deep, dark and velvety red cherry, with a complex nose showing aromas of ripe dark fruits mixed with coffee, vanilla, balsamic and woody notes. Amato Vino take a very hands-off approach to winemaking, in favour of wild fermentation, minimal intervention during the winemaking process and gentle handling.  Their wines are unfined and unfiltered and represent a different side to Margaret River than one might expect.  The delicious Amato Rosso is made from the unusual blend of Teroldego, Primitivo, Cabernet and Chenin Blanc and is bright and juicy with Maraschino Cherry and Raspberry fruit balanced with delightful, lifted acidity.  Easy going, fresh and almost dangerously drinkable, this wonderful red is a welcome addition to our list and sure to become a staff favourite before too long!

The Gonzo Combat Rouge is a rather unusual field blend of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and Viognier which are co-fermented with whole bunch fermentation.  The results is a beautifully supple yet plush and ripe red wine with sweet, spicy raspberry and cherry fruit. We've found it drinks best slightly chilled on a warm evening.

Cinsault

The MontGras Handcrafted Cinsault is a small production red wine of only 3200 bottles.  Fermented in stainless steel with 60% of hte stalks included, the wine is the aged in a combinations of 225 litre French Oak and laregr Foudres for 11 months.  The result is a relatively light yet intense wine with pronounced cherry and strawberry fruit on the nose with underlying hints of damp earth.  The palate is refreshing with well-integrated tannins and complex aromatics.

Hailing from the heart of the village of Saint-Amour, this delicious Cru Beaujolais is an utter delight.  Exuberant with juicy wild strawberry and pretty violet aromatics.  The palate is both rounded and refreshing and carries the relatively high alcohol with aplomb.  This wonderful Beaujolais is a great match to cold cuts and can be drunk slightly chilled tomake it even more refreshing!

The Villa Wolf Pinot Noir is warm and medium-bodied, with a firm acid structure. Its bright black cherry fruit is juicy, ripe, and forward, with a spicy mid-palate and lingering finish. A minimum of twelve months of ageing in used French oak barriques gives the wine a smoky depth and a nice touch of earthy tannins. It’s an excellent, approachable red wine for everyday dining.

The Monte Luzzo Barbera is another fabulous wine from the fantastic Cantine Povero.  A wonderfully clean and pure expression of the grape with fresh cherry, plum and wild berry fruit mingled with hints of violets on the nose along with notes of spice.  The palate is beautifully rounded and fresh with an abundance of quaffable fruit.  The wine spends 6 months in oak to add texture and roundness rather than imparting oaky characteristics.

The Cuvee XV Bardolino from Guerrieri Rizzardi is a wonderfully approachable, easy drinking red wine made with predominantly Corvina, Rondinella and a splash of Merlot.  The pretty hillside vineyards overlooking Lake Garda produce wonderfully fresh and aromatic wines with elegant red fruits and finely balanced, refreshing acidity.  This delicate red should be enjoyed within a couple of years of the vintage.
