Description

The El Regollar Rioja is extremely complex with a distinctive aromatic nose of violets and liquorice root alongside ripe black fruits, hints of figs and plums which open up to sweet spices.  The palate is pure silk, starting with cedar and tobacco notes which lead to red and dark fruits whilst finshing rich and full with tannins and acidity in perfect harmony.

Bodegas Amaren have some of the highest vineyards in the Rioja Alavesa and are dedicated to the preservation of native varieties whilst making highly individual, modern interpretations from some seriously old vines.  The results are simply stunning and we are delighted to be able to offer a selection of these tiny production, highly characterful wines.  Bodegas Amaren practise a form of ‘A la Carte’ viticulture whereby each strain is treated individually according to it’s variety, situation and the conditions of the vintage.  This attention to detail certainly shows when you taste the wines.

The El Regollar vineyard is situated at 526metres above sea level next to a forest and in order to maintain the balance of the local ecosystem the vineyard is worked by mule with zero use of pesticides.  The wine is a blend of Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha, Bobal, Viura, Malvasia Riojana, Moscatel and Calagrano from a vineyard planted in 1920.  The grapes are co-fermented in true field blend fashion and spend 14 months in two French oak barrels, one 400 litres and a smaller 225 litre.  Although this incredible wine is predominantly Tempranillo, each variety brings character and complexity to the finished product.

Only 898 bottles were produced in this vintage.

Chenin Blanc

The Carte d'Or Coteaux du Layon from Baumard has a very attractive honeyed nose, with lifted yellow fruits and more golden tropical elements such as mango, guava and pineapple. It has a particularly tropical character and a very fresh feel on the palate, with steely minerality and a zippy background acidity giving invigorating tartness to keep the wine luscious and buoyant. The rounded, approachable finish has good length.

2020 Cabernet Franc Seleccion, Bodegas Rio Del Elorza, Mendoza

Cabernet Franc

The Verum Cabernet Franc Seleccion, Bodegas Rio Del Elorza has classic elements on the nose including wild strawberry, blackberry, pencil shavings and a hint of blackcurrant leaf.  Lovely ripe fruits with a hint of stalky/vegetal character but not too much greenness, instead offering more body and depth of fruit and a slight touch of herbal mint. The full-bodied palate is elegant with firm tannins but a vital balancing acidity. Cedar notes show from the use of French oak and the finish is dominated by bright red fruit and mocha spice.
