Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon Blanc is famous for producing crisp, fresh and zesty styles of white wine with lively acidity and varying degrees of fruit depending on where it is grown. In it’s ancestral home in the cool Loire Valley it makes a grassy, mineral-tinged style, and is grown widely from Nantes to Pouilly Fume. Sancerre and Touraine steal the plaudits for the best well-known examples of Loire Valley Sauvignon, but less flashy appellations such as Menetou-Salon can offer excellent value for money.
Sauvignon Blanc also put New Zealand, most notably the Marlborough region, on the viticultural map where the warm days and cool nights help to produce a distinctive style that is at once crowd pleasing and extremely vibrant. Tropical fruit, gooseberry, and sometimes cats pee, are all notes that can describe a typical Kiwi ‘Sav Blanc’.
Sauvignon grows well anywhere where the nights are relatively cool and the days not too hot. The pfalz in Germany, widely throughout Chile and also in California, are all wine producing regions which make interesting and varied versionsof this noble grape variety. More often than not Sauvignon Blanc is unoaked and best enjoyed whilst relatively young, although there are always exceptions to the rule! The ‘Fume’ styles seen in USA and here and there from Europe and South Africa hint towards oak ageing (and sometimes fermentation) and are generally softer in style than the unoaked versions. Lastly, we should also pay hommage to Sauvignons role in sweet wine production, most notably in Bordeaux, where it provides vital acidity when blended with Semillon to help balance Sauternes.
Sauvignon Blanc tends to flit in and out of fashion, but it’s noble character and versatility is undeniable.
