We have a soft spot for the incredible Chenin Blancs from Baumard and gems such as this truly spectacular wine highlight the quality of winemaking at this Domaine.  Baumard eschew traditional trellising methods for this part of the Loire and have also flown in the face of tradition by switching excluisively to screwcaps for their range.  The Quarts de Chaume vineyard enjoys a superb terroir and a unique situation producing wines of rare elegance.  This remarkable wine is wonderfuly textured and manages to comine power and clarity alongside richness and precision. The Les Argiles Sec is a Vouvray in all but name.  Francois Chidaine is based in Montlouis and is responsible for putting the AC back on the map of destinations for world class Chenin Blanc. The grapes for this amazing Chenin are grown in Vouvray but made into wine at Francois' winery in Montlouis, and therefore can only be classified as a humble Vin de France.

2021 Pourquoi Faire Sans Blanc?, Domaine Serol, Vin de France

Following a disastrous harvest in France many producers looked for parcels of fruit which they could make wine from in order to have something to sell from the 2021 vintage.  Domaine Serol have a small vineyard of Chenin Blanc grapes on the highest part of their estate, grown on granite soils.  This is a deliciously refreshing white with a core of ripe honeyed, citrus fruit that is just starting to open up.  The finish is super clean with thirst quenching acidity on the long balanced finish.  Drinking beautifully now, especially with food, this will continue to develop for a few years from vintage.

The Carte d'Or Coteaux du Layon from Baumard has a very attractive honeyed nose, with lifted yellow fruits and more golden tropical elements such as mango, guava and pineapple. It has a particularly tropical character and a very fresh feel on the palate, with steely minerality and a zippy background acidity giving invigorating tartness to keep the wine luscious and buoyant. The rounded, approachable finish has good length.

2023 Montlouis Sec Clos du Breuil, Francois Chidaine

Chenin Blanc

Based in Montlouis, Francois Chidaine makes beguiling wines from Chenin Blanc and is largely regarded as the producer who put Montlouis 'back on the map'.  The Clos du Breuil is made from a single parcel of low-yielding vines grown biodynamically on flinty/clay soils.  Grapes are harvested by hand, with a spontaneous fermentation in large, old demi-muid oak barrels.  The wine is then lees aged, without batonnage, for several months.

The Zevenwacht Tin Mine White is a stunning blend of Chenin, Chardonnay, Roussanne, Viognier and Semillon, coming from vineyards planted on decomposed granite soils which lie between 200 and 350m above sea level.  Ageing in 500 litre French oak barrels helps add to the wonderful texture without detracting from the impeccably integrated exotic, spicey fruit and lively yet balanced acidity.

The Beaumont Chenin Blanc is a delicious example of cooler climate Chenin Blanc fermented in concrete and stainless steel tanks. Dry, fresh and delicious!  Although very approachable in it's youth, the Beaumont Chenin, as with many other good South African Chenin Blancs, has teh ability to age for many years.  It's a great value wine to stock up on and see how it develops.
