Description
We were utterly bowled over when we first tasted the amazing Rioja Malvasia from Bodegas Amaren. Situated in the highest part of the Rioja region, Amaren is the premium winery of the Luis Canas stable, producing exceptional wines that are a raw expression of the weathered vineyards and old vines in the Rioja Alavesa.
The grapes for this white come from the El Pomal vineyard planted in 1912 and are from the Malvasia Riojana clone. The harvest is manual with grape by grape selection taking place in the winery prior to fermentation in concrete eggs. The wine is then aged in the same egg on it’s fine lees for 14 months with a weekly battonage (stirring) of the lees to promote texture and complexity. No oak is harmed in the making of this wine, which spends 24 months in bottle (in this case magnum), prior to release.
The results are exceptional, delivering an enticing wine with great aromatic complexity. The nose offers complex floral aromas, hints of spice and brioche alongside concentrated pineapple and pear fruit. These complex flavours carry through to the righly textured palate that manages to be both intense and bold whilst retaining elegance and class from start to very long finish. Simply delicious!

2020 Rioja Malvasia, Bodegas Amaren, DOCa Rioja
Malvasia
The Rioja Malvasia from Bodegas Amaren comes from the El Pomal vineyard which sits at 515 metres above sea level and was planted in 1912. This particular strain, the Malavasia Riojana, sometimes known as Rojal, has traditionally been used by Amaren as part of a mixed field blend with Tempranillo, Viura and other grape varieties. The grapes are harvested manually in small baskets and a grape by grape selection takes place at the winery. Fermentation takes place in a concrete egg, with ageing on its own fine lees in the same egg for 14 months with a weekly bâtonnage (stirring). The wine is completely unoaked and spends 2 years in bottle in the Amaren cellars prior to release. The results are a simply stunning white and unlike any white Rioja we've come across before. The wine is bright in the glass with pale yellow reflections and intense, bright-green hues highlighting its freshness. The nose shows complex aromas of ripe pineapple and pears as well as delicate floral aromas such as orange blossom, dried flower petals, nutmeg, and some lovely brioche. The palate is complex, rich and rounded yet has plenty of room for floral and balsamic essences and remaining elegant on the long balanced finish. Simply delicious!
