Luis XIV Vermut Rojo, Fondillon

The fabulous Luis XIV Vermut Rojo is a blend of 70% young Vermut made from a base of Macabeo that has been macerated with traditional botanicals including wormwood and also a secret blend of cinnamon, cloves vanilla and orange peel.  This is blended with 30% Monastrell which has been aged oxidatively for 8 years, with a further two months in ancient Fondillon barrels.  The Monastrell gives the Vermut a wonderful garnet colour and adds richness to the wine.  Rich, with balanced notes of herbs and spice witha bit more body than other styles, this terrific Vermut is delicious with ice and a slice of orange peel.  It also comes in a quirky bottle which not only looks great but has stencilled writing that glows in the dark!

Mil Demonios Semillon/Sauvignon Partida 2, Sin Reglas

The tiny plots of vines that make up the Mil Demonios Semillon/Sauvignon blend are microvinified in Amphora and then aged in tight grained oak prior to release.  This terrific white is precise and focussed with a wonderful vein of acidity running from start to finish.  The mid-palate shows a lovely weight to it that suggests the wine will age further and gain complexity as it does so.

The La Signa-Terres from Paul Lebrun shows an incredible butter-like creaminess alongside orchard fruits, citrus and almond aromas. Following many ultra-successful vintage releases, the Langham Blanc de Blancs has switched to a non vintage blend following the 2018 vintage.  Made with 100% Chardonnay, 56% of which is from the 2021 vintage, and aged on the lees for three years, this is an energetic and wonderfully focussed Blanc de Blancs. The nose displays a tense balance between ripe green apple and conference pear with notes of white flowers and intense graphite minerality. The palate is delicate yet weighty in texture, with soft ripe pear, honeydew melon and white grapefruit acidity, finishing with a trademark saline nuttiness.

The grapes for the Lete Vautrain Brut 204 are harvested by hand and sorted prior to fermentation at a cool temperature, and ageing on lees takes place for a minimum of 36 months.  The wine shows a lovely deep golden hue in the glass with apple, peach and apricot fruit complemented by dried fruits and classic biscuity notes.  A well balanced, complex and rounded Champagne that is the perfect aperitif style.

The Taittinger Brut Réserve is renowned for its golden yellow colour with a consistent, fine, lingering mousse. The nose is light and delicate with hints of fruits and brioche. Its elegance and lightness give it the flexibility to be the Champagne for the moment but it is always an excellent aperitif.

Domaine du Landreau are 4th generation growers who produce a range of clean, crisp and expressive wines in the central Loire Valley.  The Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc grapes are hand harvested over several passages through the vineyard, ensuring the grapes are picked at their optimum ripeness.  A slow, cool ferment and 3 years lees ageing help this traditional method sparkling wine develop it's delicate floral, citrus and apple notes with nutty undertones.  Elegant on the finish with a creamy texture courtesy of the ageing make this a stunning value alternative to entry-level Champagnes.

Didier Gallimard owns 10 hectares of prime vineyards on the steep slopes around Les Riceys in the southern Aube. Didier’s son Arnaud has joined him, becoming the seventh generation, and the long-term future is now secure. Their vines’ average age is over 30 years and the dramatically sloping vineyards, which are of chalk and Kimmeridgian limestone, are planted mainly to Pinot Noir and just a little Chardonnay.
