Sauvignon Blanc

This tiny 6.5 hectare domaine in the Loire was started by Emile Balland in 1999. The Ballands have been making wines in the Loire since 1650 and his father was instrumental in achieving recognition for the young AOC Coteaux du Giennois in the 1980s.The La Pente is a first class Sancerre and the pinnacle of Emile' production.  It comes from vines are grown on Emile's finest sites in teh limestone soil of Beauregard, and he only uses the first juice from the pressing is used. After a careful fermentation, the wine is matured for large barrels for 18 months to develop complexityWonderful, textured Sancerre showing restrained tropical fruits, fine minerality and a wonderful length on the finish.  We are thrilled to have got our hands on a few magnums of this stunning wine.

The colour is a medium-deep garnet hinting at its age and follows on to the mature, complex nose. Aromas of dark fruits, spices, truffles, dark chocolate and fine oak are all present. Chateau Saransot-Dupre is a favourably sited 17 hectares property that lies between Fourcas Dupré and Fourcas Hosten in Listrac.  Due to Listrac’s cooler temperatures, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are favoured over Cabernet Sauvignon to form the majority of the blend, helping them achieve optimum ripeness.  Much like Chateau Fourcas Hosten, the wines have improved year on year since 2010 and the property were put on the radar thanks to a certain Robert Parker hailing the 2010 vintage as 'classed growth quality'.  High praise indeed!

The Rizzardi Pojega is an utterly delicious example of this style of red wine, showing a wonderful depth of fruit and terrific balance.  Made from a traditional blend of Corvina, Rondinella, Corvinone and Merlot the wine shows great concentration of dark and red fruits, but also lovely freshness and a harmonious finish.  The addition of 10% Amarone (which now has to be done by law for Ripasso's) simply adds to the complexity without detracting from the elegant freshness which seems to be the hallmark of the wines from this historic estate.  This is the kind of wine which doesn't disappoint, no matter what your taste.

The Weissburgunder Fels Reserve from Waldschutz is 100% Pinot Blanc and an absolute delight to drink.  Unoaked yet with a decent degree of richness, the wine has floral notes to the nose, a rounded palate that balances textured fruit with richer notes of caramel and hazlenuts.  The finish is long and impeccably balanced.  This accomplished white is delicious now but has great ageing potential.
