This 2016 vintage provided Fontestau with a perfectly healthy crop and there wasn't any need to add sulphur treatments in the vineyard or the winery.  It boasts a very rich garnet colour with an expressive nose showing jammy aromas of red fruit such as cherry and strawberry. The palate is ample and full-bodied with a tense, fresh structure. The tannins are rich and tasty, conferring flavour and length to the wine. The intention being to make as layered, complete and complex Pinot as possible.  The 2019 is the first release since 2015 and with a tiny production of only 49 cases we are very lucky to have been able to get our hands on some.  One quarter of the wine goes in to new French oak with the remainder seeing a mixture second, third and fourth fill oak for balance.  Fruit, spice and texture are all in perfect harmony in this wonderfully expressive Oregon Pinot Noir.  Grab it while you can!

2019 Tannat Sans Soufre, Lionel Osmin et Cie, Vin de France

Lionel Osmin has created a cracking no added sulphur Tannat from vineyards in and around Madiran.  Licourice and nutmeg spice mingle with the dense and concentrated bramble and plum fruit.  Quite plush on the palate and although polished there is still a rustic edge keeping the wine true to the grape variety.  The thickness of the skins on the Tannat grape make it a robust style that is well suited to no added sulphur wines.

2020 Morgon Cote de Py, Domaine Grange Cochard

Gamay

The Morgon Cote de Py is a wonderful example of hand crafted Cru Beaujolais from the prestigious Cote de Py plateau.  Made with organically grown, hand harvested grapes from a mixture of Granite and blue stone soils, the wine is made in the traditional semi-carbonic method with 2/3rds of the bunches being de-stemmed and 1/3rd left whole.  The wine is matured in a mixture of cask and old barrels and bottled with minimal sulphur without fining.  The result is a wonderfully complex wine that is expressive yet elegant and finely balanced.  Dark fruits and kirsch like characters mingle with dried herbs, liquorice and mineral undertones along with finely poised acidity which helps the wine remain focussed.  Delicious in it's youth, the Cote de Py also shows great ageing potential in the medium term and will continue to develop in complexity.

2020 Morgon Les Charmes, Chateau Grange Cochard

Château Grange Cochard lies in the heart of the Morgon Appelation on granitic, shaly slopes and has been crafting classic wines from their superbly sited vineyards since the 18th Century.   The 'Les Charmes' is one of the favoured 'lieu-dits' of Morgon and winemaking is traditional, with hand harvested fruit fermented carefully in the semi-carbonic maceration method with half being whole bunches and half de-stemmed fruit.  Maturation is in a mixture of vat and cask and sulphur addition low.

Grown on the northern shores of Lake Geneva this wonderful blend of Gamaret and Garanoir provides something a little different for the curious drinker.  Medium-bodied yet with an underlying power, there's an almost exotic fruit character with blueberry, dark cherry and blackberry too. Quite mellow tannins are mingled with smokey spice on the well balanced finish.  This is such a versatile wine and can certainly take a bit of chilling down in the summer months.  It's also great with food and can even handle a fiery curry!

The Di Meno is made with predominantly Catarratto plus a smattering of other indigenous Italian grape varieties.  It is a deliciously refreshing, minimal intervention white which shows citrus and tropical fruit notes.  There is some skin contact involved which gives a thirst quenching edge and some added depth and texture but none of the funkiness often assosciated with orange wines.
