The Cote d'Or AC is the newest appellation in Burgundy and this tremendous Pinot Noir from Jadot is just delicious.  Concentrated with silky red and dark fruits, good structure and a savoury note to the finish.  This isn't too juicy and a great food wine, especially with grilled or roasted red meats and a variety of cheeses.

2023 Cabernet, Domaine du Haut Bourg, Val de Loire

Red Blend

This charming red is a blend of Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc made by the passionate brothers at Domaine du Haut Bourg in the western Loire valley.  Surprisingly deep in the glass for such a cool climate, the nose reveals enticing red fruits with floral notes and an underlying whiffs of green twig/capsicum courtesy of the Cabernet Franc element.  Elegant and fruity on the palate, the tannins are soft and balanced with the acidity that keeps the wine fresh and approachable.  A perfect match for charcuterie boards and roasted vegetables.

2023 Cahors ‘Coeur de Malbec’, Lionel Osmin, AOP Cahors

This Cahors from Lionel Osmin is very typical of Malbec from Cahors - rich, full-bodied and concentrated with a wealth of blackcurrant and dark fruits, notes of clove tinged spice and mediterranean herbs.  This is a great match to a variety of dishes, especially confit duck, coq au vin and hard cheeses.

The Cepa Gavilan is the most youthful wine made at Vina Pedrosa. This is a beautiful expression of Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) showing a lovely balance of power and freshness.  The nose is dominated by generous black fruits with hints of spice and mineral undertones.  The palate is beautifully textured with well-integrated tannins and notes of vanilla and baked pastry complimenting the fruit through to the long finish.

The Fontanario de Pegoes Tinto comes from a fabulous co-operative based in the Peninsula de Setubal.  Fruit forward and easy drinking, yet in no way dull, this cracking value red wine has intense aromas of red berries, spice and a hint of vanilla. This is a well-structured and smooth wine with a soft and fruity mouthfeel, complemented by attractive coffee notes on the lingering finish.

This 100% Gamay from Domaine Moulin Camus comes from grapes grown on a slope of pure mica schist which gives the wine juicy, rounded red fruits a bit of tautness and minerality.  A warmer than normal, sulphur free maceration for three days helps bring out some warmth and roundness to the fruit, making it slightly beaujolais'esque but without the bubble gum/commercial edge that one would normally find in this price range.

The Geisha Dragon Del Desierto is an intriguing blend of mostly Viognier with some Marsanne and 10% Pedro Gimenez (Criolla Blanca as opposed to PX) that is co-fermented in a single concrete egg. Following fermentation, 90% of the wine remains 'sur lie' in the egg whilst the remaining 10% ages under flor in old barrels.  The result is a fascinating white wine that is beautifully textured yet fresh, with semi-exotic fruits such as melon and pineapple mingling with a touch of bready/yeasty complexity courtesy of the flor aged proportion.  Generous, textured and ultimately extremely drinkable, this lovely wine is one for the adventurous drinker.

This Grenache Noir from Nadal Hainault is utterly delightful.  The pretty pale ruby colour hints at a wine that is light, but it's by no means a weed.  Softly textured in the mouth with bright red fruits and lovely balanced freshness on the finish. The eminently quaffable red wine is made with minimal intervention and no added sulphur.  It displays a beautiful lightness and delicacy and could easily take a bit of chilling down in the summer months.

2023 Julienas ‘Bois de la Salle’, Cave Julienas-Chaintre

The grapes for this medium weight, fruit led Julienas are hand harvested and left in tank for 10 days to macerate in order to optimise the colour and aroma of the wine. Fermentation takes place at a warm 27/28 degrees centigrade and maturation follows until March when the wine is bottled.An intense, purple colour. Fruity aromas dominated by fragrant raspberry, blackberry and blueberry. Round, supple and rich yet balanced by a lingering freshness on the finish.

2023 Las Etelas Chardonnay, Finca Valmore, Tupungato

Chardonnay

The Las Estelas Chardonnay is another beautiful wine from the hugely talented Estela Perinetti.  Made with Burgundian clones grown at 1380 metres above sea level in the cold Finca Valmore single vineyard, the grapes for this wine are hand harvested and de-stemmed, with 5% fermented as whole bunches. All grapes are barrel fermented with natural yeast in a combination of new and second use French oak and 70% of the wine goes through malolactic, allowing freshness to be retained. The wine is then aged in a mixture of new and used oak as well as ceramic barrels (25%).

Le Pitre Primitivo is one of Mottura's flagship wines and is very complex, velvety and full-bodied, with an intense nose of sweet jammy red fruits, blackberry and chocolate along with black pepper spice. The Loidana Blanc is a new addition to the fabulous range of Priorat wines from the Marco Abella in Priorat.  This stunning blend of Garnacha Blanca, Picapoll, Viognier and Macabeo is fermented in oak and then lees aged in stainless steel.  This complex white wine shows impeccable balance with exotic fruit notes such as Quince and stone fruits alongside fresher, more mineral characteristics and beautifully poised acidity.  It's not surprising that this wine is so delicious as Marco Abella place a great emphasis on quality, hand-picked fruit frmo their perfectly sited, biodynamic vineyards in and around the famous village of Porrera.

2023 Maury Sec Cuvee 1+1=3, Clos des Vins d’Amour

Red Blend

The Maury 1 1=3 Cuvee is made from a blend of 60% Grenache. 20% Carignan and 20% Syrah, all old vines grown on a mixture of clay, schist and limestone.  The Syrah and Grenache are destemmed prior to fermentation whilst the Carignan is whole bunch fermented.  Deeply coloured in the glass, this lovely red is soft and approachable on the palate, showing elegant red and black fruits and hints of peppery spice, and silky tannins on the finish. The name is a playful nod to the Dornier family's sets of triplets.

2023 Mercurey Rouge 1er Cru, Domaine Meunier

The grapes for this wine are hand harvested from 2 parcels in the heart of Mercurey where the soil is clay and limestone. They spend 10-15 days fermenting in the tank before being put into French oak barrels, 30% of which are new.  The wine then spends 12 months in barrel before being blended and bottled.
