Moulin Touchais.JPG

1997 moulin touchais, coteaux du layon

Chenin Blanc

History documents that the first sweet wines were produced along the banks of the Layon in 1579, with Dutch merchants encouraging their production, since they appeared to have the stamina to survive the journey by boat back to the Low Countries. Whilst the family Touchais cannot claim to have pioneered the production of moelleux, their ancestors were certainly making wine as far back as 1787. That’s eight generations so far, and counting… The first six were situated not within the town, but in Tigné, the location of the original Moulin and it was from here that the original vineyard holding was built up, mostly to support the requirements for Cuisse de Bergère, a hugely successful inexpensive branded rosé that was developed by Joseph Touchais in the late 1940s and around the same period the business was transferred to the cellars in Doué-La-Fontaine. One of the best vintages of the decade there are some wonderfully tropical elements as well as plenty of Botrytis evident. Pairs perfectly with Crème Brulee, Pate or strong cheeses.

Sauteners.JPG

2010 sauternes, chateau lamourette

Semillon/Sauvignon

Lamourette is a tiny domaine which lies within a kilometre of the mighty Ch d'Yquem, and covers a mere 10 ha, making it a truly artisan estate. The soil, which is largely sandy/clay with a sub-soil of limestone, gives the Semillon a freshness and a fruitiness. Hand-harvested over 2-4 ‘tries’ (passages through the vineyard), to ensure the ripest berries are selected.  Fermentation takes place in small stainless steel vats, and partially in oak, depending on the age of the vines, terroir and ripeness of the grapes.  This is a beautifully balanced Sauternes with dried fruits, honeycomb and quince with perfectly poised acidity which freshens the wine.  Already showing nicely with a bit of time in bottle, this will continue to evolve for years to come.

Bordeaux Blend

The 2014 is just starting to show really nicely yet has plenty of life ahead of it.  This is by no means a blockbuster, being mid weight with classic Haut Medoc characters of dark fruits, pencil lead and touches of cedar perfectly balanced by well integrated tannins and decent acidity on the finsh.

Riuoja Blanco Classico Monopole.JPG

2014 rioja monopole classico magnum 150cl

Viura

This vintage takes it back to La Rioja of old, with heavy frosts throughout winter, snow and an abundance of rain. Spring was also cold and wet followed by a warm summer but without excessive temperatures. These conditions provided a long, slow ripening period, which enabled the production of great, intense wines.

2015 chateau saransot-dupre, listrac medoc, magnum

Bordeaux Blend

Chateau Saransot-Dupre is a favourably sited 17 hectares property that lies between Fourcas Dupré and Fourcas Hosten in Listrac.  Due to Listrac’s cooler temperatures, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are favoured over Cabernet Sauvignon to form the majority of the blend, helping them achieve optimum ripeness.  Much like Chateau Fourcas Hosten, the wines have improved year on year since 2010 and the property were put on the radar thanks to a certain Robert Parker hailing the 2010 vintage as 'classed growth quality'.  High praise indeed!

Tempranillo

2016 was one of the standout vintages from both a quantity and quality point of view. The harvest was lavish with good maturity with the wines showing a lot of fruit and body with good ageing potential.  The Bardos Reserva is a bold Ribera del Duero that is well-structured yet  smooth, with an intense cherry red colour with shades of violet and purple tinges.  On the nose there is a great aromatic intensity with mature dark fruits, chocolate, spices and smoky aromas. The well-structured palate is very harmonious and fleshy, finishing with mature tannins and finely balanced acidity.
