Description

We are very excited to welcome the fabulous wines of Bodegas Alegre Valganon to our shelves.  Husband and wife team Eva and Oscar strive to produce wines which hark back to a traditional style of Rioja, pre-dating the arrival of the Bordelais and Phylloxera.  They farm old plots of vines in the shadow of the Obarenes Mountains which are some of the highest and coolest in the region, yielding wines that are refined and aromatic.  Their vineyard plots are managed meticulously and they favour whole bunch fermentation, long macerations and ageing in large, neutral barrels.

This delicious Rioja is a blend of 75% Tempranillo & 25% Garnacha with a quarter of the wine fermented in whole bunches.  The wine has a 30 day maceration and is aged in large, old oak for 16 months.  Silky smooth, as one would expect from Rioja, yet with a freshness and lightness of touch to it’s crunchy red, mineral tinged fruits.  Garnacha adds a little bit of heft but overall the wine is wonderfully silky and elegant with terroir and fruit shining through rather than oak.

2021 Promis Ca Marcanda, Gaja, IGT Toscana

Merlot

The Ca Marcanda Promis is a complex wine with an undeniable elegance. The nose is rich and concentrated, with blueberry, liquorice and cocoa hints. It starts fresh and then develops balsamic notes and scents of graphite, before becoming more mellow in character with a rhubarb and menthol note. The palate is voluminous with fine-grained and silky tannins on the finish.

2020 Chateau Saransot-Dupre, Listrac Medoc, Magnum

Bordeaux Blend

Chateau Saransot-Dupre is a favourably sited 17 hectares property that lies between Fourcas Dupré and Fourcas Hosten in Listrac.  Due to Listrac’s cooler temperatures, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are favoured over Cabernet Sauvignon to form the majority of the blend, helping them achieve optimum ripeness.  Much like Chateau Fourcas Hosten, the wines have improved year on year since 2010 and the property were put on the radar thanks to a certain Robert Parker hailing the 2010 vintage as 'classed growth quality'.  High praise indeed!
