Description

The 2018 Cantayano Verdejo, Viticultores Cantalapiedra reveals pear, blossom and beeswax characters, with a touch of herbs and mineral complexity on the nose. Great acity and substantial richness from lees ageing make this a wonderful wine and different take on the Rueda style.

The Cantalapiedra family has about 20 hectares of vineyards, spread over different plots in the municipality of La Seca, the birthplace of the Verdejo grape variety. Currently seven of these 20 hectares have been developed, although their project aims to increase the winery’s production to the total area.

Wine maker Manuel shares a passion for this grape with his father, who he named the winery after. Harvesting later, organically and from single vineyard plots, his wines demonstrate power and finesse in equal measure. His heart and his vineyards lie in the centre of  DO Rueda, yet his wines are miles ahead of the appellation and somewhat atypical in style for normal Rueda.

2021 Puligny Montrachet, Domaine Meunier

Chardonnay

The grapes for this approachable Puligny are hand harvested and undergo a gentle pressing.  The juice is then left to settle for a few days then put into French oak barrels, 30% of which are new. Indigenous yeasts are used for fermentation and the wine spends 12 months in barrel before being blended and bottled.  Great persistence in the mouth, this wine has a wonderful freshness to it and can be enjoyed in it's youth.

Chenin Blanc

The Carte d'Or Coteaux du Layon from Baumard has a very attractive honeyed nose, with lifted yellow fruits and more golden tropical elements such as mango, guava and pineapple. It has a particularly tropical character and a very fresh feel on the palate, with steely minerality and a zippy background acidity giving invigorating tartness to keep the wine luscious and buoyant. The rounded, approachable finish has good length.
