Description
Only 20% of the Chateau de la Greniere is aged in old oak barrels whilst the remainder is aged in a mixture of steel and concrete vats. The result is a wonderfully fruit led style of claret that shows complex red fruit flavours, is generous and rounded on the palate and finishes with a lovely balance of power and finesse.
The history of this chateau dates back to the 17th century and they are generally considered one of the leading lights in the Saint-Emilion satellite of Lussac. The vineyards are farmed organicially with the utmost care being taken to promote soil health through various biodynamic practises. The vineyard is planted with a classic right bank mix of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc.

A warmer than normal, sulphur free maceration for three days helps bring out some warmth and roundness to the fruit, making it slightly beaujolais'esque but without the bubble gum/commercial edge that one would normally find in this price range.

The grapes for this wine are hand harvested from 2 parcels in the heart of Mercurey where the soil is clay and limestone. They spend 10-15 days fermenting in the tank before being put into French oak barrels, 30% of which are new. The wine then spends 12 months in barrel before being blended and bottled.
