Elyssium Black Muscat Quady Dessert Wine.JPG

2023 Elyssium Black Muscat, Quady Winery

Muscat

Andrew Quady's change of career from making fireworks to making wine produced an explosion of its own kind when he created Essensia from the Orange Muscat grape. It was an instant success and until 1985 he could not make enough to satisfy demand. Now Quady is the foremost American winery specialising entirely in dessert wines and continues to win medals worldwide. The grapes were crushed, chilled and allowed to macerate, in order to extract the desired aromas and flavours. Fermentation was arrested with a neutral grape brandy. This arrested fermentation preserved the delicate aromas of the fresh, ripe grapes. The wine was then aged for three months in small French oak barrels. Elysium is a brilliant crimson purple colour with aromas of ripe berries, rose petals, strawberries and lychees. The vibrant acidity balances beautifully with the sweetness of this wine, making it very refreshing.

2023 Fixin, Albert Bochot

Pinot Noir

This delightful Fixin from Albert Bichot shows a very pretty nose of violets and rose scented red fruits.  The palate is fleshy with vibrant red fruits and a decent amount of structure coupled with refreshing acidity.  Hints of spice come through on the refined, long finish. Produced in the Côte de Nuits village of Fixin, situated between Dijon and Gevrey-Chambertin, this Pinot Noir is grown on calcareous clay soils with pockets of marl. The vineyards occupy gently sloping sites where significant variations in altitude, sometimes reaching 80 metres within a single plot, contribute to the wine's character, balance and complexity. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted upon arrival at the winery. Fermentative maceration takes place in temperature-controlled wooden vats for 18 to 21 days, allowing for gentle extraction of colour, flavour and structure while preserving the finesse and aromatic purity of the Pinot Noir fruit. Aged in French oak barrels for 14 to 16 months, with 20% to 30% new oak. This maturation regime adds subtle spice, texture and complexity while maintaining freshness and balance.Founded in 1831, Albert Bichot is an independent, family-owned House now managed by the sixth generation, Albéric Bichot. Since then, they have consistently developed a unique position in Burgundy, combining the expertise of a historic négociant with the authenticity of its own vineyard holdings.

2023 Fleurie La Madone, Albert Bichot

Gamay

The Albert Bichot Fleurie La Madone is one of those joyous red wines that simply begs you to have a second or third glass.  Beautifully perfumed on the nose with hints of floral tinged red fruits leading to a vibrant palate packed with juicy fruit underpinned by fine minerality.  For all it's fun and sheer drinkability, this cracking red is by no means frivolous.  Enjoy it with a wide range of foods from fatty duck rillettes to herby roast chicken...just make sure that you've got another bottle in reserve!Founded in 1831, Albert Bichot is an independent, family-owned House now managed by the sixth generation, Albéric Bichot. Since then, they have consistently developed a unique position in Burgundy, combining the expertise of a historic négociant with the authenticity of its own vineyard holdings. Produced from Gamay grown in the renowned Fleurie Cru of Beaujolais, this wine comes from vineyards planted on pink granitic soils with piedmont alluvial deposits. The La Madone climat sits on the slopes of the Fleurie hill beneath the historic Chapel of the Madonna, one of the region's most celebrated vineyard sites. This distinctive terroir contributes finesse, aromatic complexity and elegance to the wine. The grapes undergo fermentative maceration in temperature-controlled open vats for 9 to 12 days, allowing gentle extraction of colour, flavour and structure. This approach preserves the delicate floral aromatics and bright fruit character that have made Fleurie one of the most admired Crus of Beaujolais. No oak ageing is used. The wine is matured in stainless steel vats for 8 to 9 months, helping to retain the purity of fruit, floral complexity and freshness that define the Fleurie style.

Moulin Camus Gamay.JPG

2023 Gamay, Domaine Moulin Camus, IGP Loire

Gamay

This 100% Gamay from Domaine Moulin Camus comes from grapes grown on a slope of pure mica schist which gives the wine juicy, rounded red fruits a bit of tautness and minerality.  A warmer than normal, sulphur free maceration for three days helps bring out some warmth and roundness to the fruit, making it slightly beaujolais'esque but without the bubble gum/commercial edge that one would normally find in this price range.

Ver Sacrum Geisha Dragon.JPG

2023 Geisha Dragon Del Desierto, Ver Sacrum, Los Chacayes, Uco

White Blend

The Geisha Dragon Del Desierto is an intriguing blend of mostly Viognier with some Marsanne and 10% Pedro Gimenez (Criolla Blanca as opposed to PX) that is co-fermented in a single concrete egg. Following fermentation, 90% of the wine remains 'sur lie' in the egg whilst the remaining 10% ages under flor in old barrels.  The result is a fascinating white wine that is beautifully textured yet fresh, with semi-exotic fruits such as melon and pineapple mingling with a touch of bready/yeasty complexity courtesy of the flor aged proportion.  Generous, textured and ultimately extremely drinkable, this lovely wine is one for the adventurous drinker.
