Red Blend

The 2024 Secateurs Red Blend by AA Badenhorst has to be amongst the best he's made.  Adi bought a neighbouring farm that he used to buy grapes from but now has pick of the crop for himself.  There's a hgher proportion of Cabernet in this release than usual, adding more cassis and dark fruit flavours to the mineral tinged spice of the Shiraz. Fuller than normal too, but by no means less approachable, with juicy tannins and terrific balance.

The Hancock and Hancock Shiraz/Grenache blend is made in a beautifully restrained and supple style.  There's plenty of ripe dark plum fruit, pepper and spice courtesy of the Shiraz with the rose petal perfume and red cherry flavours of Grenache. Well balanced through to the finish, this drinks really well now, but will cellar nicely for 5 years or so.

The De Bortoli Accomplice Chardonnay is a light straw colour with lifted aromas of ripe peach and nectarine complemented with a decent lick of vanilla oak. The palate is soft and creamy and exhibits ripe stone fruits. Integrated oak and a gentle acid nuance for a very long finish.

The Wolftrap White has a nose that is bold, intense, and rich with stone fruit aromas of peach, nectarine and yellow plum as well as gentle whiffs of angelica, spice, and fresh ginger. The Beaumont Chenin Blanc is a delicious example of cooler climate Chenin Blanc fermented in concrete and stainless steel tanks. Dry, fresh and delicious!  Although very approachable in it's youth, the Beaumont Chenin, as with many other good South African Chenin Blancs, has teh ability to age for many years.  It's a great value wine to stock up on and see how it develops.
