The Flametree Chardonnay is beautifully balanced, displaying power and elegance in equal measure, plenty of vibrant citrus and stone fruit flavours and supportive oak courtesy of 9 months barrel ageing. This is delicious now but will continue to develop for a couple of years.
Flametree Wines is located on the picturesque shores of Geographe Bay in Western Australia, entry point to the renowned Margaret River wine region. The previous vintage of this wine was a Decanter Magazine Wine of the Year in 2021 so it had big boots to fill! We were delighted to see that the 2020 vintage didn’t disappoint us when it landed.

2021 Puligny Montrachet, Domaine Meunier
Chardonnay
The grapes for this approachable Puligny are hand harvested and undergo a gentle pressing. The juice is then left to settle for a few days then put into French oak barrels, 30% of which are new. Indigenous yeasts are used for fermentation and the wine spends 12 months in barrel before being blended and bottled. Great persistence in the mouth, this wine has a wonderful freshness to it and can be enjoyed in it's youth.

2020 Verum Chardonnay, Bodega Del Rio Elorza, Patagonia
Chardonnay
The grapes for the Verum Chardonnay are cool fermented for 15 days, 10% in American Oak and the remainder in stainless steel, before undergoing a further 6 month period in tank prior to bottling. The nose has subtle toast and vanilla with lovely integrated tropical fruit characters. On the palate the wine exhibits richness but also depth and balance. The diligent use of oak supports rather than dominates the stone and orchard fruit, with the refreshing acidity complimenting the cool climate style. In a nutshell, extremely enjoyable!
