Austria

Austria has a long history of wine production and one which hasn’t always run smoothly. Today, Austria produces food friendly wines which are generally made from indigenous grape varieties. These varieties are a true representation of the climate and conditions in which they are grown. The fiercely continental climate in Austria lends itself more to the production of white wines. 65% of the country’s output is white, the majority of which is made from the Gruner Veltliner grape variety. (More than a third of the country’s vineyards grow Gruner Veltliner).
Austria’s vineyards are mostly situated on the eastern fringes of the country.  The Alps influence the weather patterns and impart a distinct clarity and fresh acidity into the wines. Look out for delicious, crisp whites from Riesling, Gruner Veltliner and Roter Veltliner. The red wines produce wonderfully crunchy and red fruit scented gems from Blaufrankisch, Sankt Laurent and Zweigelt.

2018 Vom Kalk, Weingut Weninger, Weinland

Red Blend

The Vom Kalk from Weingut Weninger is a fabulous natural red wine made with a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sankt Laurent.  After a manual harvest the grapes are destemmed and fermented with ambient yeasts in cement tanks. The wine is then aged in a mixture of cement tanks and 500 litre wooden barrels and bottled without filtration or fining with just a minimum of sulphur.
