Description

Established in the 1960’s at Chateau Thierry by the marriage of Robert Lété and Liliane Vautrain, Champagne Lete Vautrain is a small, 8 hectare Recoltant-Manipulant, meaning they own all of their own vineyards and have complete control of the growing and winemaking process from start to finish.

The grapes are harvested by hand and sorted prior to fermentation at a cool temperature, and ageing on lees takes place for a minimum of 36 months.  The wine shows a lovely deep golden hue in the glass with apple, peach and apricot fruit complemented by dried fruits and classic biscuity notes.  A well balanced, comples and rounded Champagne that is the perfect aperitif style.

50% Pinot Meunier, 25% Chardonnay & 25% Pinot Noir.

Champagne Blend

Champagne Henri Giraud make outstanding Champagnes with an attention to detail that is second to none.  The first fermentation is carried out in oak casks from the Argonne, where the especially tight grained oak lends a supportive rather than dominating role to the wines.  Minimal intervention in the vineyard and meticulous selection from terroir to terroir results in wines that are complex, expressive and downright delicious.  Don't just take our word for it though, here's a few comments from renowned wine critics:

Rue de Sorbier Levasseur.JPG

nv brut nature rue de sorbier, champagne a. levasseur,a cuchery

Champagne Blend

This is another beautful Champagne from the Levasseur stable and show what you can achieve by honing in on terroir and acute attention to detail in both the vineyard and winery.  80% Pinot Meunier, 15% Pinot Noir and 5% Chardonnay from the oldest plots in the vineyard, this wine has a healthy 30% Reserve wine in the blend.  Stunning value again (see Noir de Terroir), with quite exotic fruit content, a dry, mineral backbone and clean, crisp finish.  This wine spends 4 years ageing on it's lees which helps add to the roundness, depth and complexity and is way beyond the minimum required in the region.

Comtes de Champagne Taittinger.JPG

2011 comtes de champagne, grand cru blanc de blancs, taittinger

Chardonnay

Taittinger's Comtes de Champagne is a rare treat and only made in the finest vintages from 100% Chardonnay from 5 of the greatest Grand Cru vineyards in Champagne.  2011 was a particularly good vintage for Chardonnay, marked by its early ripening and drought conditions which forced the vines to delve deep in search of water for growth.

Germar Breton Brut.JPG

nv brut, champagne germar breton, aube

Champagne Blend

This delightful, and rather smart, Champagne comes from a relatively young Champagne House that started in 2005.  Based in the southerly Aube region, they make approachable, terrific value wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.  This wonderful introduction to their range shows expressive brioche, green apple and quince fruit and has wonderfully balanced acidity.  Germar Breton are certainly a Champagne House to keep an eye.
