Description

The Mineralstein Pinot Noir is generous, fruit led and amazingly approachable.  Packed with ripe, red cherry fruit and slight spicy notes this wonderful wine is rounded, silky and almost dangerously easy to drink.  Two thirds of the wine is aged in second and third use French Oak with the remainder aged in steel for freshness.  This isn’t an archetypal Spatburgunder, but more a classic Pinot with a German accent.

Gerd Stepp grew up in Bad Dürkheim in the Mittelhaardt of the Pfalz. As a child he watched and helped his parents tend their vines and make wine. He would help them prune the vines, harvest the grapes by hand and – his favourite task – drive the tractor. Gerd always knew that wherever his career took him – and like so many of us he started in Oddbins in London – he would return home. Today, Gerd farms the family’s vineyards and runs the little winery, also buying some grapes from like-minded growers in the region. Having returned to Bad Dürkheim after making wines around the globe, his technical winemaking skills combined with commercial experience allow him to produce a range of wines which are both great value and especially good and true expressions of these grape varieties.

2023 Gamay, Domaine Moulin Camus, IGP Loire

Gamay

This 100% Gamay from Domaine Moulin Camus comes from grapes grown on a slope of pure mica schist which gives the wine juicy, rounded red fruits a bit of tautness and minerality.  A warmer than normal, sulphur free maceration for three days helps bring out some warmth and roundness to the fruit, making it slightly beaujolais'esque but without the bubble gum/commercial edge that one would normally find in this price range.

Fermentation takes place at a warm 27/28 degrees centigrade and maturation follows until March when the wine is bottled. An intense, purple colour. Fruity aromas dominated by fragrant raspberry, blackberry and blueberry. Round, supple and rich yet balanced by a lingering freshness on the finish.

The Duc de Belmond Cabernet/Syrah has a lovely deep colour in the glass. The nose shows spice, blackberry and cassis with a whiff of oak, and leads to a palate that is round, smooth and spicy.
