Description
The Benegas Sangiovese comes from ungrafted vines planted by the family in 1935 and represents the perfect blend of ‘New’ and ‘Old’ world. Distinctly Sangiovese with an Argentine twist this deeply coloured red wine shows lots of wild red fruits with notes of vanilla and cocoa on the nose. The palate is nicely structured with more red fruits, hints of spice and perfectly poised acidity. The finish is long and balanced with herbal-tinged smoky notes.
Federico Benegas Lynch was raised at ‘El Trapiche’, a winery established in 1883 by his great, great grandfather, Don Tiburcio Benegas, one of the original pioneers of Argentine wine. The winery was finally sold in the 1970s and in 1998, following a successful business career in Buenos Aires, Federico returned to Mendoza to re-kindle his lifelong passion and professional destiny, wine. He bought Finca La Libertad, an historic 40-hectare vineyard with ‘soils’ of stone on the old Upper Mendoza riverbank in Cruz de Piedra, and the old winery that belonged to his mother’s family which he quickly set about refurbishing. His idea was based on the traditional French Châteaux system, where proprietorship of vineyard and winery are inextricably linked.

2023 Geisha Dragon Del Desierto, Ver Sacrum, Los Chacayes, Uco
White Blend
The Geisha Dragon Del Desierto is an intriguing blend of mostly Viognier with some Marsanne and 10% Pedro Gimenez (Criolla Blanca as opposed to PX) that is co-fermented in a single concrete egg. Following fermentation, 90% of the wine remains 'sur lie' in the egg whilst the remaining 10% ages under flor in old barrels. The result is a fascinating white wine that is beautifully textured yet fresh, with semi-exotic fruits such as melon and pineapple mingling with a touch of bready/yeasty complexity courtesy of the flor aged proportion. Generous, textured and ultimately extremely drinkable, this lovely wine is one for the adventurous drinker.
