Red Blend
The 2024 Secateurs Red Blend by AA Badenhorst has to be amongst the best he's made. Adi bought a neighbouring farm that he used to buy grapes from but now has pick of the crop for himself. There's a hgher proportion of Cabernet in this release than usual, adding more cassis and dark fruit flavours to the mineral tinged spice of the Shiraz. Fuller than normal too, but by no means less approachable, with juicy tannins and terrific balance.

The Hancock and Hancock Shiraz/Grenache blend is made in a beautifully restrained and supple style. There's plenty of ripe dark plum fruit, pepper and spice courtesy of the Shiraz with the rose petal perfume and red cherry flavours of Grenache. This Lebanese icon is made from a blend of Cabernet Franc and Syrah that sees 10-14 hours skin contact and fermented at 18 degrees in stainless steel. Patrick Vauvy makes a delightfully pale Salmon coloured Touraine Rose from later harvested Gamay, Cabernet Franc and Pineau d'Aunis. The Vermut Rojo, red vermouth is produced in the same way by Martínez Lacuesta since 1937. The Conzia - or extract, aromatic plants and herbs macerated cold in white wine - is aged in American oak barrels, and is added to the white wine with sugar, citric acid and alcohol.
