The Cantine Pirovano Apassimento Rosso is a lovely example of this ever popular style of red wine. 2024 Secateurs Red Blend, AA Badenhorst, Swartland

Red Blend

The 2024 Secateurs Red Blend by AA Badenhorst has to be amongst the best he's made.  Adi bought a neighbouring farm that he used to buy grapes from but now has pick of the crop for himself.  There's a hgher proportion of Cabernet in this release than usual, adding more cassis and dark fruit flavours to the mineral tinged spice of the Shiraz. Fuller than normal too, but by no means less approachable, with juicy tannins and terrific balance.

2024 Shiraz/Grenache, Hancock & Hancock, McLaren Vale

The Hancock and Hancock Shiraz/Grenache blend is made in a beautifully restrained and supple style.  There's plenty of ripe dark plum fruit, pepper and spice courtesy of the Shiraz with the rose petal perfume and red cherry flavours of Grenache. Well balanced through to the finish, this drinks really well now, but will cellar nicely for 5 years or so.

2024 Sunset Rose, Chateau Ksara, Bekaa Valley

Don't be put off by the slightly darker colour of the Sunset Rose by Chateau Ksara.  This Lebanese icon is made from a blend of Cabernet Franc and Syrah that sees 10-14 hours skin contact and fermented at 18 degrees in stainless steel.  Packed with red berry fruit and hints of spice, this is a terrific rose to try if you fancy a change from the usual.

The Kloovenburg Village Red is a juicy, approachable blend of 59% Grenache, 32% Syrah, 14% Garnacha Peluda and 5% Mouvedre made by the talented Duncan Stuart.  Slight hints of oak compliment the bramble, strawberry and white pepper notes.  Terrific value, this is a must try for any Rhone Ranger looking to dip their toes in the sea of South African wines.

2024 Touraine Rose, Patrick Vauvy

Red Blend

Patrick Vauvy makes a delightfully pale Salmon coloured Touraine Rose from later harvested Gamay, Cabernet Franc and Pineau d'Aunis.  The floral nose leads to a beautifully fresh, rounded palate with red fruits and whiffs of spice.  Light enough to enjoy as an aperitif yet with enough body to take on smoked meats and cheeses.

2025 Lorca Lo Ancelotta/Malbec, Mauricio Lorca, Mendoza

It isn't always easy to find decent low alcohol red wines that are truly enjoyable, but we think we've uncovered a little gem with the Lorca Lo.  Made with Ancelotta and Malbec from naturally early ripening vines in eastern Mendoza, this bright and fresh red is packed with crunchy red fruits and is a joy to quaff.  If you're looking for a red that is light in style but doesn't compromise on fruit or structure then you should try this juicy little number.

Ai Galera Poetico Tinto, Tejo has an intense ruby red colour. Vinous and clean aromas with hints of red berry fruits. Round in the mouth and medium bodied. A well rounded finish with mellow tannin.

The Eirados label is made by Quinta Santa Eufemia and this Ruby Port is everything you would expect from a 5th generation producer. Rich dark and red fruits, nicely integrated alcohol and well-balanced finish.  This port is foot trodden and aged in large oak barrels for 4 years before release.

Vermut Rojo, Lacuesta, Haro

The Vermut Rojo, red vermouth is produced in the same way by Martínez Lacuesta since 1937. The Conzia - or extract, aromatic plants and herbs macerated cold in white wine - is aged in American oak barrels, and is added to the white wine with sugar, citric acid and alcohol.
