Description

The Architect Chardonnay by Philip Shaw is a pale straw yellow with a slight green tinge. The nose is complex and alluring with honeyed fruit, vibrant citrus and a touch of toast. It has a fresh palate with layers of stone fruit, savoury characteristics and creamy nuances. Bright citrus acidity gives the wine clarity and drive. Philip Shaw has been making wine for 56 years and has twice been named International Winemaker of the Year and Australian Winemaker of the Year. The wines are estate grown and made at Koomooloo Vineyard. Sitting in one of the coolest and highest growing regions in Australia, Orange. The vineyard is unique for Australia with over 10 passes by hand, with all the grapes being hand sorted in the winery.


The Architect is part of Philip Shaw’s ‘Character’ series which are named after the main qualities he feels you need to make a successful vigneron.  Other wines in the range include The Dreamer (Viognier), The Conductor (Merlot), The Wirewalker (Pinot Noir), and last but not least The Idiot (Shiraz)!

The grapes for this approachable Puligny are hand harvested and undergo a gentle pressing.  The juice is then left to settle for a few days then put into French oak barrels, 30% of which are new. Indigenous yeasts are used for fermentation and the wine spends 12 months in barrel before being blended and bottled.  Great persistence in the mouth, this wine has a wonderful freshness to it and can be enjoyed in it's youth.

This tiny 6.5 hectare domaine in the Loire was started by Emile Balland in 1999. The Ballands have been making wines in the Loire since 1650 and his father was instrumental in achieving recognition for the young AOC Coteaux du Giennois in the 1980s.The La Pente is a first class Sancerre and the pinnacle of Emile' production.  It comes from vines are grown on Emile's finest sites in the limestone soil of Beauregard, and he only uses the first juice from the pressing is used. After a careful fermentation, the wine is matured for large barrels for 18 months to develop complexityWonderful, textured Sancerre showing restrained tropical fruits, fine minerality and a wonderful length on the finish.
