Bulgaria
The wines of Bulgaria are once again gaining recognition amongst serious wine drinkers. Bulgaria is making fine wines from both indigenous and international grapes. Today the newer producers such as Edoardo Miroglio are seeking quality over quantity.
Mass scale plantings of international grapes in the 1950’s were used to pump out everyday wine for the Soviet Union, but the wines also gained a reputation for value in the west as well. (Students of a certain age will no doubt be very familiar with cheap Bulgarian Cabernet)! The most widely planted grape in Bulgaria is Merlot, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon. There are now conscious efforts to match classic bordeaux staples to the correct terroir rather than blanket planting. Local grape varieties such as Mavrud are also beginning to receive attention as it provides strapping reds suitable for ageing. This grape needs a long growing season and is planted in the south of Bulgaria on the Thracian Plains. The high summer temperatures are moderated by the black sea, providing a mild climate.
Bulgaria has two designated wine zones, the Danubian Plains and Thracian Lowlands. Over the next few years people within the Bulgarian wine society believe the country will be separated into nine regions, leading to a further uplift in Bulgarian wine quality.
