2016 oldenburg syrah, stellenbosch
The 2016 wonderful Oldenburg Syrah is a medium purple colour and whilst quite closed initially it opens up with delightful aromas of brambles, black wine gums and mulberries. A light, earthy hint of mushrooms as well as white pepper appears alongside a herbal edge and appealing hints of vanilla and liquorice. The tannins are fine but well structured and interact with the acidity to produce a slightly spicy finish.

The average vine age here is 35 years and the domaine was certified organic in 2009. The altitude of the estate and the shade provided by surrounding mountains, together with meticulous work to balance the ecosystem of the vineyard, means the grapes maintain a fresh, vibrant acidity despite the heat. In the cellar, great care is taken to produce balanced, elegant wines that reflect their terroir.

The result is a thrilling young red that is free of the constraints and manipulated flavour profile that come with barrel-ageing. This is a very pure and naked example of the Syrah grape. Dangerously drinkable on release, it could be expected to age for three to five years in bottle.
