The Weissburgunder Fels Reserve from Waldschutz is 100% Pinot Blanc and an absolute delight to drink.  Unoaked yet with a decent degree of richness, the wine has floral notes to the nose, a rounded palate that balances textured fruit with richer notes of caramel and hazlenuts.  The finish is long and impeccably balanced.  This accomplished white is delicious now but has great ageing potential.

2022 ‘Les Chirats’ Syrah/Viognier, Aurelien Chirat, VDF

Syrah Blend

The Les Chirats Syrah/Viognier is a wonderfully floral and elegant blend of 90% Syrah and 10% Viognier from vineyards around Saint Joseph.  The practice of adding a small proportion of Viognier to Syrah is common in Cote Rotie and helps to add softness and aromatics to the Syrah from this part of the Northern Rhone.  This wonderfully friendly and approachable red wine is fermented on Condrieu lees which gives the wine even more aromatics. Enticing blue and black fruits on the nose are joined on the palate by more savoury leathery notes and hints of peppery spice.  The mineral-tinged finish is finely poised showing evidence of the granite soils.

The cool mountain air and abundant sunshine of the Tupungato are perfect for the cultivation of Cabernet Franc.  The styles produced here are different to those of the Loire valley but still posess a wonderfully enticing perfume.  This delicious red wine from Achaval Ferrer is bold with rich, dark fruit character, well structured tannins and herbal notes.  Delicious now with some breating, this lovely red will continue to develop for up to 10 years from vintage.

Amato Vino take a very hands-off approach to winemaking, in favour of wild fermentation, minimal intervention during the winemaking process and gentle handling.  Their wines are unfined and unfiltered and represent a different side to Margaret River than one might expect.  The delicious Amato Rosso is made from the unusual blend of Teroldego, Primitivo, Cabernet and Chenin Blanc and is bright and juicy with Maraschino Cherry and Raspberry fruit balanced with delightful, lifted acidity.  Easy going, fresh and almost dangerously drinkable, this wonderful red is a welcome addition to our list and sure to become a staff favourite before too long!

Red Blend

The Baramban from Bodegas Alto Moncayo is a sumptuous blend of 50% Garnacha and 50% Tempranillo grown at 550 metres above sea level. The complex nose shows abundant blackberry, currrant and violet aromas, leading to full yet silky palate of layered blackberry, plum and cherry fruit mingling with more floral notes, spice and subtle oak.  The long silky finish is beautifully balanced and hides the 15% abv with aplomb.  This beautiful wine is fermented in open top tanks and spends 7 months in a mixture of French and American oak.

The Clos le Comte is a tiny, organically farmed vineyard that produces wonderfully elegant Sauternes.  The grapes are harvested after several passages through the vineyard ensuring that only the very ripest grapes are selected.  Wonderfully ripe, concentrated and complex fruit aromas. The rich bouquet shows notes of dried fruits, almonds, apricots, fresh citrus and peach blossom. Well structured on the palate with a viscous density resulting from the high levels of botrytis. The Fels Am from Anton Waldschutz is a fuller expression of Gruner Veltliner with some added depth and texture due to 6 months ageing on lees.  There's so much to excite here, with a nose of exotic fruits, spice and dried herbs.  The palate is full, round and rich yet doesn't lack any of the spiciness one would expect from the grape.  This is delicious now but could age gracefully for years to come.

The 2022 Chardonnay Hunting Hill is an impressive, focused style. It has a sense of energy, being almost buoyant with the movement of a skimming stone across your palate. There's a powerful core of fruit here and it has plenty of substance within its no-more-than medium-bodied core before kerpow! It fires home with an almost spicy kick. Clever oak use, reminiscent of toasted nuts, meets restrained flavors of lemon and lime bitter and nectarine fruit. A wine that's still in its cocoon so give it time. It may even have the edge of Maté's... Big call. 2024-2035.
